Flamelight Character in The Myriad Realms | World Anvil

Flamelight

Flamelight is the most powerful of the magisters of the Incandescent Council, and one of the strongest mortal mages of Aurgentia. He was, in fact, one of the members of the Hero Company, a group composed of some of the most dangerous individuals of the continent.   He was also one of the very few survivors of the final confrontation of the Hellfire War. Today, he has officially retreated to the Incandescent Council to focus on the local politics. That is, however, a lie. Just like most of his public image.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Despite appearing untouched during the day, he is in fact only barely alive. January's attack destroyed his face completely and ruined his esophagus, mouth, and lungs making eating, drinking and even breathing deeper a torture, not to mention disfiguring him horribly. Mirriam's blow rendered his legs paralyzed and destroyed his heart.   He only survived that through the intervention of his patron, and while he managed to replace his heart, he covers the rest with use of some artifacts. But the injury is still there.

Apparel & Accessories

He is wearing a white and gold robe of the magister of the Incandescent Council while acting as a magister. As a head of the Underworld Club he is wearing a Dominion of Mankind's style black business suit and doesn't cover his injuries, knowing fully well that they make him irrecognizable.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Childhood
Flamelight was born as Willel Wehr, the third child of an elderly magister from Alzath, in the territories of the Incandescent Council. He was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, receiving best possible education (in magic and politics) and living in luxury and comfort.   It's hard to say when exactly things started to grow wrong with the kid that was eventually going to become Flamelight. He managed to maintain a clear record throughout his childhood, and has proven himself to be extremely skilled with fire magic. Despite being the third child, he was clearly the most skilled of all his siblings.   However, the more suspicious people around him (such as his older sister, Sorie) began to notice certain things. There were occassional cases of cattle mutilation in the surroundings of the Wehr family estates. More than that, between his twelfth and eighteenth birthday twelve people were found dead in the nearby settlements, with signs of vicious mutilation to their corpses.   Sorie's attempts to uncover the truth behind it led to her unexplainable disappearance, shortly before Flamelight's eighteenth birthday. Unknowingly to people around him, sacrificing his close blood-relative was a necessary part of establishing a pact with the lords of Gehenna and becoming a proper demonologist. To the world at large, however, he remained a pleasant and eternally smiling flame mage, quickly raising in the ranks of the Council.

Pre-Hellfire War
Soon after his 28th birthday, Willel Wehr departed from Alzath. Officially, he wished to experience the world after having established his fame among the fellow mages of the Council, seeking to improve his skills with magic with practical combat experience before settling down and hopefully becoming a magister.   Unofficially, he seeked to improve his skills freely, without the oversight of his peers, while traveling anonymously. At some point he visited the city of G'har, the capital of a population of infernal-magic practicing giants that was officially a part of the Council territories. It is unknown what exactly he did there, but his power was elevated significantly. Judging from the future events, it's likely that there was a clear connection that he wanted to keep secret.   It is unknown what exactly he was doing during the next ten years. The most logical theory is Flamelight living a life of traveling adventurer heavily invested with various local criminal syndicates (as he showed a significant knowledge about those later on), occasionally spicing it with human sacrifices and other horrifying crimes that even those syndicates didn't want to be involved with.   Flamelight returned to the Incandescent Council about a year before the outbreak of the Hellfire War, with many suspecting that he was warned by his demonic patron that the war was going to start soon. During that year he become an official part of the Council. Secretly to most, he was already a fledgling demigod at this point.

Hellfire War, Early
When the war broke out, his first course of action was using his charisma to rouse his fellow magisters into destroying the Grand Duchy of G'har, due to their nature as 'fifth column' for Hellfire. He led the army himself, and during next three weeks has burned the city of G'har to the ground, massacring its entire population to the last child.   Today it is suspected by some that Flamelight wanted to bury the knowledge about his own involvement with Gehenna, and either suspected that some of G'harnians figured out that it was him (he was there anonymously) or he wanted to make sure that the knowledge about the reason for his growth in power was going to be buried forever.   He was one of the most militant members of the Council, bravely fighting on the frontline. He was leading a formation of the Alzath-Kalanian army that was delaying the advance of the demonic Southern Army towards the city of Tavum. When the siege began, he continue raiding the siege camps and tearing through the enemy supply trains and foragers, lacking forces to break the siege, in big part due to the lack of decisiveness and internal strife within the Council.   His gambit was successful. While it took the Realm of Days entrance into the war to break the siege of Tavum, the popularity that Flamelight gained for his decisive actions and his proficiency in magic that he showed during the war propelled his popularity.   It is believed that he met with January 34th, the future hero of the Realm of Days soon after the lifting of the siege. Whatever happened there, it was clear that the two of them truly and thoroughly detested each other ever since.

Hellfire War, Late
As the Hellfire's offensive pushes north and south were repelled, and other fronts were stalled, the continent began to gear up for a counteroffensive. A part of this process was the establishment of the Hero Company, a selected group of representatives of all the countries throughout the continent, supposed to face Hellfire himself.   Flamelight wasn't the initial choice for the Council's representative. The original choice, magister Iceblade, has been found dead soon after his candidacy has began to triumph over the Flamelight's, a fact officially acredited to the Hellfire's demons deciding to eliminate the soon-to-be threat. Many signs point towards Flamelight's responsibility.   Despite his evil, Flamelight has continued to perform admirably as the Hero Company's main advisor on the demonology, presenting it as a purely theoretical knowledge that he obtained in the past, and further reinforced by whatever he obtained from G'har. This was, once again, a scheme.   Flamelight's end-goal was ensuring that only certain members of the Hero Company would survive the clash with Hellfire, namely those that he considered to be morally worse. It was a form of a ritualistic sacrifice (via Hellfire himself) that, if successful, might have elevated his power higher, perhaps allowing him to become a god - or a demon lord.   He failed. January's personal disgust for him and suspicions spreading throughout the Hero Company. Tertius Syllus and Mirriam Artori ended up predicting his goal and made a counterplan of their own.   In the end, Flamelight failed, his 'chosen' heroes dying, Mirriam thrusting her sword through his heart and spine, while January melted most of his face off, together with insides of his mouth, esophagus, stomach and lungs. The damage he received was lethal even for someone of his level. Unawarily to the remaining heroes, though, Flamelight survived, but only through the intervention of his demonic patrons.   He played dead as his enemies were fleeing the former capital of Lothria that was being devoured by Conflagration, a magister disaster caused by the collapse of Hellfire's almost-finished teleportation gate leading to Gehenna. Then he managed to escape himself, before officially returning to life, taking advantage of the remaining heroes finding it hard to strike against him in the middle of the Council's territories, and lacking evidence for his misdeeds.

Nowadays
Flamelight has retreated to Alzath, still as crippled as ever but good in pretending otherwise. His daylight persona is that of the magister that has, effectively, become the overlord of the Incandescent Council thanks to his war-time achievements and public popularity. He is spending most of his time engaging in politics and other high life.   His nighttime self is something else entirely. He was crippled, and surviving that has shaved most of his favour with his demonic overlords of Gehenna - especially as he also failed in his great work. He is thus in urgent need of gaining more, typically by performing (or causing indirectly) futher attrocities.   He is secretly the head of the Underworld Club, a secret society of villainous individuals throughout the Council territories, acting as intermediary for recruitment and a meeting ground for the crime lords, cultists and the likes, all in the attempts to cause as much horrible events to happen as possible.

Sexuality

He is - or at least appears to be - heterosexual. This, however, is way too little to fully describe Flamelight as a person. The real problem is that he is an extreme sadist that is actively changing depravity into a form of art. To call him a rapist is, similarly, an understatement. Violating his sacrifice was a part of his initial pact with the demon lords of Gehenna, a fact that's bad on its own, even without mentioning the fact that she was his older sister.   His current on-going sexual endeavour include one of the princesses of the Empire of Lothria that he secretly kidnapped during the Hellfire War. He is, for now, limiting himself to progressive brainwashing and some bodily modifications without actually touching her, however this is only because he is waiting for the finished product. All while using her existence as a bargaining chip to influence the Lothrian's government and keep it on the side of the League and, through that, Council.   It is generally believed but those that know that his endgoal is making her fully and completely loyal to him, so that he can officially marry her and then using her as a pretender to the throne of Lothria - and, eventually, and emperor of the territories of the former demonic invasion, with full access to Conflagration. This, coincidentally, could as well reignite the Hellfire War.

Intellectual Characteristics

Flamelight is a polyglot and a polymath. He knows no less than fifteen languages (including some of Gehenna), and his scholarly interest are varied. He is extremely (superhumanly, in fact) intelligent.

Morality & Philosophy

Flamelight is one of the most horrible and evil people in the world, a fact that seems to have no clear reason for. His family, while not exactly an all-loving one, was decent enough, with no signs of abuse. Flamelight himself was clearly mutilating animals and then human form childhood. So what led to that?   Perhaps we'll never know. What is clear is that for Flamelight there is nothing sacred, and he is ready to commit any evil if it furthers his goal - and some that simply because he feels like it and he can get away with it.
