The Planet with Many Names

The Monster's Alliance takes place on a small planet that no longer has an 'official' name. With no Imperial force to define which names are given to the world, every culture and community is free to name their world as they see fit. The same goes for the continent of Valahiri and its major regions, just because they are now called by one of their names for simplicity's sake, doesn't mean that they aren't called differently from culture to culture. A single location can have thousands, if not millions of different names, and the entire world has millions, if not billions of different names. All of these names are true. They have power, whether spoken or written, because every name and every language in existence is a manifestation of the Echo, the world's main source of magic.

Metaphysics and Magic

Movement as a Basis for Existence: The Echo and The Eternal River

Everything in this world exists in movement, and what exists in movement, exists in sound. This combination of sound and movement is called the Echo, all things in the universe has one, and it is the main source of magic.

The Echo

Being present in all of existence and the post prominent source of magic, the Echo has many manifestations, and many more dangers. The following article will go into further detail on what the Echo is and how it works.

The Eternal River

The Eternal River is where all Echoes in the universe flow together. It is named after is own deafening noise, which sounds like a violent river that has the power to split entire planets in half. Needless to say, those who have the misfortune of witnessing the Eternal River in its purest form, won't come out with their minds still intact, if they ever come out at all.

Echoes to Images: The Gaze and the Mask

A person's Echo can be manipulated with more than just sound. Gaze magic and Mask magic change Echoes through seeing, or through manipulating how someone is seen. Whether someone plays a role out of their own free will, or is forced to play a role to fit the gaze of someone else, their Echo will shift in order to accomodate that role, for better or worse. Sometimes much worse.
