Burakrin

The home of a historical alliance between Humans and Dwarves, Burakrin literally translates as "The Way Through" in Dwarvish, representing the deal that was struck between the two races for mutual benefit against the Dragons of old.   Today The Republic of Burakrin is a melting pot of races, creeds and colours, making it an exciting and desirable place for many inhabitants of The Manylands. Lately though, a cold war has stirred with The Dragonborn Kingdom of Rachir, a monarchy that the Republic believes is trying to claim the mountains of Rachner and Rachgarurt from them, both above and below ground. Mining companies from both nations race to drain all they can before the other, but there are fears this could spill into all out war. Having been burned before by Dragon-kind, relations have soured, and paranoia has forced the Senate to pass a rule that all Dragonborn must carry identification to prove they are residents of Burakrin when challenged, in order to stop Rachiri spies crossing their already guarded border. They have also blockaded trade routes by road and sea, in order to apply more pressure to force Rachir into backing down in its mining race.   A sense of unease seems to permeate around this once thriving Republic, and unless action is taken, things may just get worse before they get better...

History

Scholars maintain that the first Dwarves came out from the mountains during The Age of Legend, settling Runedar amongst others, before encountering Halfling seafarers, whom they formed a great friendship with.   But they were soon under threat from the Dragon armies, including Ushtarg the Deceiver, the most feared and huge Red Dragon. This was, until one Halfling, named Inilson, managed to negotiate a peace treaty with the Dragon, ending The First Rachir War.   But peace didn't last, as The Deceiver earned his name and reneged the treaty, attacking Runedar and starting The Second Rachir War. It was then that the first Humans arrived from Grenforth in The Crow Flies, coming to the aid of the Dwarves.   Though envoys were sent to The Empire of Fallen Stars to call for aid, the Elves refused, and this betrayal has not been forgotten by prouder Burakrin nobles. Were it not for the Humans, the Dwarves would have surely been exterminated, and thus this historic alliance and fellowship began.

Religion

The Great Eight

- the most established religion throughout the Manylands, there are temples dedicated to The Eight throughout Burakrin, most famously The Great Temple of The Eight in Hamarfaern - a large eight pointed building resembling the symbol of The Eight themselves, along with the School of the Eight situated also within the city. Runedar is home to arguably the oldest Temple of The Eight, second in size only to that of Hamarfaern. Delvator is home to The Order of the Broken Fang, a group of Knights formed after The Second Rachir War, who also have shrines to The Eight, though they primarily follow Agrafall, God of the Struggle, and Spark, Goddess of Renewal.

The Dwarven Creation Collective

- this particular religious sect is newly established, but is aggressively establishing itself throughout Burakrin, especially in Runedar, where their followers compete for podium space with that of The Eight. Their followers are exclusively Dwarves, believing themselves to be created in the image of "the one true God" Faerfan - the Dwarven God of Creation. Though some vocally affirm their following of this religion, it is believed that there are many more who wouldn't admit it publicly, yet serve Faerfan in secret.

The Light and The Dark

- The Barkfang Monastery is in possession of very old scripture, depicting the endless battle between light and dark. Monks of Barkfang are trained to be Guardians of the Light, and so look to protect the world from the coming darkness. Though there are some followers of these teachings outside of the monastery, it is almost exclusively held by past and present monks.

Foreign Relations

The Dragonborn Kingdom of Rachir: (poor) Recently, a kind of cold war has started with the neighbouring Kingdom. The Republic have introduced a blockade on the border, not allowing people or goods to pass through. There is believed to be a more open conflict happening beneath the mountain borders, where both nations are competing for resources.   The Golden Way Consortium: (good) The Guilds that control Isk enjoy trade, and Burakrin is perhaps one of their biggest importers of goods. Though few from Isk seek to live in Burakrin, the few exceptions have been welcomed with open arms... so far. Isk is popular as a vacation site, provided holidaymakers can avoid the less desirable areas and pickpockets.   The Crow Flies, Grenforth: (allies) Historical allies of the Republic, Grenforth has always been a committed friend, and there in times of need. So much so that over time, members of the Grenforth family and their bannermen have chosen to settle in the Republic, some even getting a place of Office within the Senate.   The Crow Flies, Rookwood and Bronn: (neutral) By comparison to Grenforth, little is traded with the rest of The Crow Flies. The other powerful families seem to be more reserved, though recently some have visited the Republic, seeking to build relations.   Provincian Clans: (neutral) The brutal way of life in Provincia is not to be taken lightly, but some admire their spartan existence. Trade is minimal, but some have recently seeked to explore the Republic - and it never hurts to have an army of hardened warriors on your side!   The Laranlas High Council: (neutral) The forest nation tends to keep itself to itself, though over time many Gnomes and Wood Elves have come to Burakrin and settled. Laranlas is also a great supplier of wood, herbs and natural resources - yet the Republic tends to trade more with Isk and The Crow Flies than Laranlas.   The Empire of Fallen Stars: (neutral) Ever since The Age of War, the Republic and the Empire haven't seen eye to eye. The Republic will not forget the way they were abandoned by the Elven Empire during The Second Rachir War, and so the relationship has remained frosty. They still trade some goods, but keep diplomatic relations to a minimum.

Agriculture & Industry

With its Dwarven and Human heritage, the Burakrin Republic is famed for its industry and ambition, delving deeper and farther than any other nation. As such, smiths, miners, craftsmen and labourers are most common. Burakrin is home to a lot of wizards and magic users, and through secrets past from generation to generation, enchanting items has also proven a lucrative trade.   Though there are farming lands in Burakrin, a lot of agriculture is imported from The Crow Flies, particularly from Grenforth, the feudal neighbour and historical ally of the Republic. Burakrin produce is considered plain, with its farmers not able to cultivate the flavourful and bounteous fruit and vegetables that The Crow Flies can.   In addition, as a coastal state, the Halflings of Burakrin have a proud seafaring heritage, meaning fish is even more abundant and popular than livestock, and many make a good living as shipwrights. Burakrin has arguably the largest navy of any force in the Manylands, and most certainly the best-equipped.

Trade & Transport

Due to its natural resources, Burakrin most commonly exports their wealth of gemstones, metals and stonework. Their knowledge of craft comes with a price! They also export ships, weapons and armour across the Manylands, with ships being the primary route for trade. Though they have a great deal of enchanting knowledge, the Senate has prohibited exporting magical items, much to the relief of Isk's Golden Way Consortium, perhaps the only direct competitor for items of this nature.   Their biggest import is that of food and livestock from The Crow Flies, and fine materials such as cloth and silk from Isk.
