A war early in the Empire's history against the city-states of Algard and Calteri.

In the first decade of the Empire's existence, the power of Artus I and his chief advisor Ribent the Whispermonk grew incredibly quickly. The generosity of the new kingdom and its position as the central trade hub of the Gratic Plain made it an attractive city for people searching for a new home.   One of those newcomers was Bilb Póltages, a refugee from the nearby village of Ashton. He came bringing word that the Calterians, Artus's allies during the construction of the city, had conquered their little village and done considerable damage in the process. Even though the fledgling city was not in a position to go to war or even help the small amount of refugees from the conflict, Artus decided to go to war against his old masters.   Calteri and Algard were already embroiled in a conflict over the border village of Frelg, and so they was already a large amount of fighting in the Deranti Forest. The two cities were so preoccupied with one another that the declaration of war from a small farming town like Gratic City was worth barely a footnote.   Artus decided to use this to his advantage. If the two cities fought themselves into oblivion, it would be easy to defeat them even with a small army of barely a thousand. So he waited, and watched as Frelg traded hands from Algard to Calteri and back again. Each time, several hundred more lives were lost among the armies of the two small nations, which would be several hundred less soldiers they would have to fight to invade their lands.   Within a year, the two cities were willing to make peace and focus their attention on the small town making alliances with several other villages across the Gratic Plain. By that point, it was too late. Artus marched into Frelg, and the townsfolk rejoiced that they were finally being treated as people and not pawns in some kind of political game. The same happened in Ashton and Antin, leading to a widespread rebellion against the two city-states. Algard and Calteri were completely exhausted and were quickly encircled.   In the fall of 10 I , Algard and Calteri both surrendered to Gratic City, their large walls completely useless against enemies inside them. In a move that surprised both sides, Artus ordered the ruin of both cities, with the land being salted, the gates thrown down, and large scale destruction of the Green Fort of Algard. The people of the two cities were resettled throughout the Gratic Empire, as it was now known, and the Gratic Empire now covered most of the Gratic Plain and into the Deranti Forest.
