Chapter 1: Intro

General Summary

Introductions

The campaign begins as fate brings all of our protagonists together in this lost world. Max, Amanita, Montgomery, Anari, Zea, and Azrael all meet for the first time, most inquiring about the nature of Max and his tree-like body. However, introductions don't last long as the group is suddenly attacked, and the six have to fight together for the first time.

The First Fight

The group, split half and half across a river, was attacked by a disfigured bear, its leg mangled by a bear trap, and covered by vines, one vine piercing its eye from inside its body. The vines moved as the bear did, in some sort of unnatural and symbiotic, or perhaps parasitic, relationship. As the bear made its way down the river, roaring with anger, it was attacked and pulled into the water by Anari's thorn whip. On the nearby cliffside, Talmorian Ivy sprung suddenly to life, reaching out with its vines and attacking the party. After the disformed bear was killed by a combined effort of Azrael and her magic, Zea's windlike slashes, and Anari shifting into a bear herself, Anari inspected the bear, learning its life was subsisted by the plant and drove it to rage, figuring that someone was behind this deed. Azrael prayed over its slain body as the animated ivy was struck down by Max's longsword, blown off by Montgomery's revolver, and set ablaze by Amanita's magic.   The party's respite after battle was short lived, as a pack wolves approached atop the cliffside, howling and barking, apparently attracted by the sounds of battle. A tall and built Goliath woman approached downstream, yelling at the party to follow the river, which will lead them into town. The group agreed, following her orders as they followed the path into town.

Shorrok

The party made its way into Shorrok, a coastal fishing town built upon the cliffside. Shorrok is a small, but dense town with buildings made of stone mortared together by a clay mixture, and roofed with brown and red clay tiles. Small fishing boats, known as dories, line the harbor.   The party, a misfit bunch, get glances and looks from the people of Shorrok. Looking for shelter from the rain, as well as food and drink, the party find the local tavern in Shorrok. The party was met with a cozy scene, the first shelter for many of them after days or weeks of travel. Animal hide rugs lined the clay tile floor and low, leather top tables made up the seating of the inn. Zea took notice of two men talking in the corner of the inn, one man with hair tied back in a bun and another with a bald head. She stealthily landed on the bald man's head unnoticed and eavesdropped on their conversation. The two men were talking about the struggles they were facing in the fishing season, hoping to catch and cure enough fish by the time "he" arrives - which the party later learns is a merchant by the name of Nashir.   After ordering a round of drinks, and Montgomery sitting down to play a tune on his lute, the party sit around a table and talk. Anari, noticing constant glances from the two men in the corner, decide to confront and intimidate them. After a small commotion, the two men introduce themselves as Malatt, the man tied back hair, and Shav, the bald man. Shav and Malatt tell the party the story of the town's plight. The people of Shorrok, about 20 years ago, fled an orc attack from the north, using their ships to escape, and landed at what they now know as Shorrok. They continued their old livelihoods from up north, fishing. While the land was abundant in stone, clay, and fish, it lacked key resources, namely wood. Trees in the region are extremely rare, and the people of Shorrok quickly harvested the limited available trees. A few years ago, a merchant from the desert city of Al-Ghinan came across the town and struck a deal with its people. He would trade Shorrok the resources they need, such as wood and lumber, in exchange for cured fish. While a beneficial relationship at first, the merchant quickly indebted the town to him, raising prices year over year, forcing Shorrok to catch more and more fish.   After Malatt and Shav told the party the story of Shorrok, the goliath woman returned and introduced herself to the party as Ylva Giantsblood. She covered a meal for the party and asked Lerya, the Innkeeper, for rooms. After her hospitality, she asked the party to help find her father in the morning, who goes to sea for weeks at a time, but hasn't returned back yet. The party agreed and then retired for the night, sleeping in the rooms provided in the Inn, ending the protagonist's first day together.
