Maladred Emberborn

Maladred was the younger twin brother of King Edgard Emberborn, who was the third ruler of the Emberborn bloodline. He is still considered to be one of the greatest commanders the Valley has ever seen. During the many campaigns of his father's and later his brother's rule, Maladred led their armies to a great number of victories. He refused the title of general when it was offered him simply for the sake of his lineage and instead worked his way up through the ranks based on his own merit. He finally accepted the rank of Commander General during the third year of the War of the Hungry. Because he took this path, his men loved him fiercely and followed him anywhere.   Legend has it that when Maladred swung his staff the impact could be felt from a hundred yards away. This would rejuvenate his battered comrades and instill fear into the hearts of his numerous enemies. However, Maladred's genius shone most brightly not in the dredges of man-to-man combat, but when surveying the field of battle with his officers. He drew up plans with the precision of a surgeon, without losing the oversight of a hawk.   In 512 Maladred was ordered by his brother to hunt and kill the recently discovered anathema. After this successful hunt, the Emberborn set their sights on conquering the free people of the Eastern Woodlands. A task Maladred gladly took upon himself.   Maladred was presumed missing alongside his brother during the second year of the war of the Incursion. The reality, however, was far worse. In an attempt to pincer the enemy's force, he and his battalion had unknowingly crossed over into the shadowlands, a place where time works differently and the veil between the living and the dead pulls away. He and his comrades fought for their survival in this hellish place for almost 37 months before finding their way back.

Maladred's return

Maladred and his surviving companions were discovered by a surprised scouting party who had been clearing the area around the Rock of undead. It was then that they learned that no less than 40 years had passed since their disappearance. Maladred returned from this dark journey a changed man. Nonetheless, he respected and supported the rule of his niece, even though she had given up on her grandfather's dream of a unified Emberborn kingdom. His niece responded in kind and immediately restored his former holdings and titles, including the one of Commander General.   In the following years, Maladred spent an incredible amount of his wealth on equipping his fellow survivors with the best armor and weaponry money can buy. After all, they had become a family forged in blood. It also quickly became apparent that, while none of his soldiers were Exalts, they did not age like other mortals. This soon earned them the title of The Undying.
