Hearthwarming

When a couple wish to be "married" in a sense, they must have their own house to move into together. Whether this is one that has been built for them or one purchased or given to them, the legal conjugality is not complete until the couple have initiated their Hearthwarming. During this process, the couple will move into their new home to continue their lives together.

History

The tradition dates back to the days of early Isturoth, when a warm, safe home was prized above all else. The concept of the "home" is a central one to Isturian culture, and so the christening of a new one by a freshly-wed couple bares great significance.

Execution

During the main ceremony, once the couple are prepared to move in proper, families of both parties will be present for the warming of the new hearth. The couple will together hold a lit flame and walk through the entrance first and remove their shoes, followed closely by their family members. The process must also be witnessed by a local authority, which is often a municipal leader or a priest of Barud. The couple then together light the hearth, which has already been anointed and filled with fragrant kindling.   The fire is the beating heart of any home. The lighting of it as a couple represents a great and sacred accomplishment, and the beginning of a new life for them in their new house. It also speaks to a commitment both parties have to tend the home as they will their relationship.   Once the lighting of the hearth has been completed, the witness will proclaim the ceremony complete and a period of festivities will commence, beginning with a feast in the new home.
