There isn't a more feared condition in The Lost Place than The Lunar Sweats. Many a Luftkun has been lost due to the affliction despite its unfortunate popularity. Warning signs are posted of it in almost every region and market; even signs of how to avoid this terrible affliction. The simple fact is that some Luftkuns (and even other Lost Place creatures) think that it will not happen to them; yet their family and friends end up suffering from a case of The Lunar Sweats.

History

There isn't much written history on The Lunar Sweats. Local folklore has it as the first case took place during the Festival of the Great Double Full Moons more than a hundred years ago. The Festival Of the Great Double Full Moons is a Luftkun ceremony; as they can't write and they don't allow other creature species to take place in the festival, there is limited documentation of the event. A verbal account of the incident is that of nightmares.

Cause

The Lost Place is pretty hot and humid. Jungle covers much of the land. Walking paths are cut through the dense underbrush but exotic plantlife (the likes of which most of us will never see) grow just off of these paths. Once a month during the double full moons, flowering plants open up to absorb the moonlight. Some of these flowers release a spore that gets picked up by the wind and scattered throughout most regions of The Lost Place. Anything and anyone that inhales the spore will get the sweats.

Symptoms

The first symptom is an overwhelming feeling of being flushed. The affected then develops fever followed by a rapid heart rate. Soon the affected will begin to sweat. The extensive sweating leads to dehydration and a thirst that can not be quenched. Insanity soon follows. The ill will roam the night violently dismembering and murdering anyone that crosses their path.

Treatment

There is no known treatment at this time. Once the morning comes the afflicted return to their normal state; however, the victims must live with the guilt of the damage they have created. In most circumstances, they have murdered family and close friends while in their altered state. Many can't face what they have done. Many are guilt-stricken travel south of The Fountain of Wayne to find Smack; in hopes of finding his den and throwing themselves to his never-ending hunger.

Prevention

It is really easy to keep from getting The Lunar Sweats. The best prevention is to stay inside during the double full moons each month and let the night pass. Sadly some in The Lost Place believe that the Lunar Sweats is a hoax. Some residents, as silly as it sounds, believe that staying inside during the double full moons goes against their rights and yet refuse to do so despite the danger to their families and community. It is uncertain if the spores from one plant cause the ailment or if it is caused by multiple plants combining.
