With the vast cave system secure and under the able command of Morrigans step-father Hector, the group finished preparations for the return to Saltmarsh. The kobold captive Scree revealed the red dragon had given him enough magical scales to make a single guard drake and agreed to make one for the group. Morrigan took this for herself, and with a new ally the return to Saltmarsh was begun.
The first night was uneventful, but upon reaching the mysterious waterfall known as Chimeras Crossing a new group was spotted ahead. Upon investigation, it appeared to be some Priest of Muir escorted by a mercenary company known as The Basilisks Stare. Initially they were distrustful, but with Zelems disguise as Sariel Aloro, a female half-elf of the order, the two were able to convince their half-elven leader Falqinor that they meant well.
The caravan had a bit of a mishap when one of their wagons nearly fell over the narrow crossing, and they were waiting for aid from a group of dwarven miners to get them back on track. Morrigan and Zelem convinced him they were allies and agreed to travel with them for the time being. During the passage south, the duo learned that the Stoneheart Valley Trading Company was financing the church of Muirs expansion to Saltmarsh in an effort to expand their influence, and that this caravan was transporting a large sum of gold for the construction of a new church.
With the knowledge that potential rivals were transporting vast wealth to finance a goal they opposed, Morrigan and Zelem began to plan the possible theft of the gold from the well-fortified caravan and waited until nightfall before they began to enact their plot.
