Thar

Thar, also known as the Great Broken Land, is a rocky, broken moor stretching for hundreds of miles with a harsh climate north of the Moonsea. For most of its past, it was exclusively inhabited by wild tribes of humanoids such as orcs and other savage monsters who were constantly at war with one another.   That time ended about 2000 years ago when Minotaurs, under the leadership of Haask, established their kingdom and smashed the Orc and Gnoll tribes of that time and cleared the path for other non-goblinoids to slowly enter the area. Their "empire" lasted about six centuries, and after their departure the other humans and demi-humans that had established a foothold in the region stayed and expanded their influence.   From 400 DR through 1200 DR various Lords and self-declared Kings established small pocket kingdoms which would temporarily serve as bastions of civilization. These would last a generation, maybe two, and then falter plunging their land back into barbarity. It wasn't until 1288 that the indomitable Eldritch Knight Beldoran slew the 1/2 Ogre Maulog, the last Tharkul of the humanoids, and established the true Kingdom of Thar.   The lands of Thar do not suit mass farming. The people here live on fish, various forms of wildlife, and wild flora including berries, wild cucumbers and cucamelons, a type of wild rice that is relatively easy to harvest from the marshes, a pungent tasty dill, and a hearty green-leafy plant (like a peppery tasting spinach, or more pulpy arugula). There are extensive salt mines in Thar, which provides the region its chief export. The cucamelon pickles of Thar are some of the best in Faerûn; the saccharine berry wine they produce, not so much.   Thar relies on Companies of Warriors to protect the various caravans and trader groups, and retains its corp of Bannered Knights for defending the cities against raids and incursions from marauding bands of Half-Orcs (and worse). A Fighter or Ranger can make a good living in Thar, and any adventurer can find plenty of what they seek.
