Humans of the Region

Almost all humans in the region are descended from the human subrace collectively called Damaran (da-MARE-an in normal use, or DAM-ar-an in the courts of the capital). They make up over 90% of the human inhabitants of Vaasa, Damara and the kingdoms south of Damara. The remaining 10% could be from literally anywhere.   In fact, Damaran is one of the oldest human ethnic groups of Faerûn tracing their roots back to the people of ancient Narfell. The "Nar" as they were called were short and stocky humans with dark tan skin, weighing between 60 and 115 kilograms (260 lbs) for males and between 45 and 100 kilograms (225 pounds) for females. Hair was typically black and naturally straight, or a little wavy. Little has changed over the centuries and Damarans are for the most part the same.   Modern Damarans have heights ranged from 150 to 190 centimeters (about 6'2") tall for men, while women stand 13 centimeters (5 inches or so) shorter on average. As their blood mixed with other humans (and near humans) exotic eye colors began to emerge, and today a Damaran human is almost certainly black haired, but can have eyes of almost any color imaginable. Skin tones have lightened only negligibly and most Damarans still have dark tan skin.   The Barbarian tribes of the Black Steppes are also descended from the Nar, but unlike modern civilized Damaran bloodlines they are heavily mixed with Orc (and other near humans) which has dramatically increased their size and changed their skin from tan to pale olive or dun. Facial hair has also become more prevalent and varied and dark hair can now come straight, frizzled curly, or thin and wiry. Citizens of Telos and Darmshall (the two most civilized settlements of Vaasa often talk about how their blood is more pure and children who do not fit a certain look or who exhibit too monstrous a quality are often believed to be the product of infidelity with the savages. Such children are often treated with great cruelty and are sometimes turned over the hordes and tribes to be raised outside the cities. A rare few are found by the Monks of Palischuk who take them to be raised there according to their martial traditions.
