The Wild Savannah of Ghur
The Wild Savannah of Ghur will never be fully explored. It simply lies beyond the realm of feasibility. Here, grasses grow higher than the head of an ogre. The sun beats down brutally, the humidity from Serpents Breath settling in over the Savannah like the breath of a wrathful god. The Savannah is a hunting ground, and these are lands best left to the beasts who keep them. The Savannah is a place where the lone creature is picked off. It is a crucible that focusses on togetherness.
The most common threats are swarms. Insects that could be harmless in any other context become vicious in the Savannah. Beetles will flense flesh from bones, with their prey unable to take more than a few steps before collapsing. Scorpions will inject vast amounts of venom, overloading their prey’s nervous system and swarming them. Swarms of flies will take smother their target, choking until they can feed.
Larger are the packs. Hyenas, hounds, and other beasts travel together. They will gladly take down any prey who they come across. It is common to come across bone graveyards, where the packs drag their prey back to feed upon communally. When one spies bones on the ground, it is a sign that you’ve entered a pack’s territory, and should immediately flee.
Far above the Savannah, great winged creatures fly. Ranging from terrorgeists to pteradons, death flies on swift wings. There is a moment of relief when a shadow comes, and terror when the claws following it strike.
The extreme heat is compounded by the lack of major water sources. The scattered oases act as loadstones to life, but are also the most dangerous because of it. These water sources are also breeding grounds for all sorts of diseases, as though the water pipes straight from Nurgle’s garden. The Savannah is deceptive, for it has many ways to kill the unprepared. However, the biggest threat comes from the Gargants. Tribes of the giants live in the region, coming to raid from their veldt homes. Fortunately, giants have large blind spots in which a human can easily hide. Unfortunately, these blind spots are beneath the bottoms of their feet.
