Kiorthan

Once the warren of the Skaven of Clan Keeqius, the magmahold of Kiorthan was built from the ruins of the fyreslayers attack on the skaven. It is the westernmost of the Aqshy's Heart holds and serves to watch the western approaches to the volcano, and defend from any possible attack by the hostile inhabitants of Aqshy. As such it has been cut and carved into a fortress at the pinnacle of the fyreslayers’ practical architecture and magmic engineering. The halls echo constantly with the grinding of stone and the screech of steel as bridges, doors, gateways and huge magmaducts are opened and closed, redirected and changed to control corridors and paths through the hold. Whilst most of the hold was built and carved into caves and tunnels and is, as such constructed in the typical fyreslayer fashion of halls and rooms with labyrinthine interconnecting corridors, the depths of the hold are largely built into the sheer sides of a huge ravine. Due to this the mechanical network of vast fyresteel and stone bridges is essential. These bridges are masterpieces of fyreslayer engineering, powered by the magmic flows redirected from the nearby lava river they are able to shift and change, turning, retracting and moving to enable the fyreslayers to move around the hold.

Defense

The primary defense of Kiorthan is the semicircular rampart and the gatehouse at its center, which juts out of the rock of the volcano to surround and guard the entrance. These walls are built of stone, but the outward face is lined with several inches of fyresteel, making it shine in the light of the nearby lava river. That river also provides much of the defense of Kiorthan, it is channeled throughout the hold running alongside corridors and flowing down lavafalls to light the hold, these can be overflowed to flood rooms or corridors, or to cut off doorways with falling lava. The vast chasm splitting Kiorthan in two has become another barrier in the protection of the hold, the moving bridges can be retracted to cut off an invading armies attack or can be held as a chokepoint by a small number of Hearthguard while the rest of the fyrd masses.

Karl Derranar

Kiorthan is run under the leadership of Karl Derranar, a ruthlessly efficient leader who was the Karl of several of the Hearthguard fyrds defending Avizarr. During the assault on the Skaven warren that would become Kiorthan, he won renown in the eyes of Runsmiter Varskan Hammerkin, by holding the flanks of the fyreslayer’s column against the horde of skaven nightrunners who had out-maneuvered them. His bravery, battle prowess and his support and control of his duardin during what should have been a slaughter saw him promoted to become the Steward of Kiorthan after the battle. After the battle it was Derranar who oversaw the renovation and construction of the new hold and ensured it would be fit to serve as the Iron-Fire Fyrds westernmost defense. A focus on utility and purpose over form and the application of the epitome of the fyreslayers magmic engineering has seen it truly grow to fit this purpose thanks largely to Derranar.

The Steel Fists

Derranar’s bodyguards are the elite Hearthguard of his personal fyrd from his time in Avizarr. Known since Derranars appointment as the Steel Fists, for their discipline and deadly efficiency in battle. Despite this they can be hot-blooded and impetuous at times, like all fyreslayers, and it is not wise to stir them up, especially when on duty.
