The Nether

Geography

The Nether is a near infinite realm accessible only through mysterious portals. While some of the biomes are beautiful in their own right the Nether in general is not a friendly place. For the most part the landscape of the nether is formed by pockets in the netherack. Some of these pockets are so large that you would think the nether is indeed an open place. It isn't. The huge lava lakes might give this impression too, but as you travel you'll realize that everything is surrounded, or covered in netherack.

Biomes

Nether Wastes

An empty expanse of red, netherack and lava. No one knows if the netherack is really moving (growing?) or if it's just a trick of the light. Best not to question it and move along quickly.

Soul Sand Valley

If the creepy whispering voices don't scare you away you'll find an expanse of brown sand and soil scattered with huge bones of an unknown species. The local skeletons are also quite unfriendly hosts. Plus the occasional fireball, a welcoming gift from the Ghasts.

Warped Forest

A blighted place covered in huge blue fungi, a stark contrast to typical reds of the Nether. The only place you'll find Endermen in the Nether, and the air... it carries the scent of the void. Best to stay away.

Crimson Forest

At least these massive fungi fit right in, you might not even see them between the fog of the Nether and the netherack. If you aren't wearing gold the local Piglins will let you know that you've wandered into their forests, if you are well the hoglins don't care either way.

Basalt Delta

Extremely tricky to navigate with massive spires of basalt hiding sneaky pockets of lava, put on your best jumping shoes and pray to whatever gods you believe in. The air is thick with...ash? We think? Maybe wear a mask. Also watch out for the magma cubes. Good Luck.

Structures

Nether Fortress

Who Made these massive imposing structures? Not the Blaze that guard the towers, nor the Wither skeletons that wander its massive meandering halls. So who? Either way make sure not to get lost and keep an eye out, none of the current occupants are friendly by any means.

Piglin Bastion

While you can find Piglins all over the nether the bastions are their home. This is where they store all their treasures and where tribes will congregate for celebrations, meetings, or just because they want too. This is also the only place where you will find Piglin Brutes.

Ecosystem

While each biome has it's own individual ecosystem the Nether as a whole is incredibly hostile to it's inhabitants. There are some lingering relics indicating that it might've been a more habitable place at some point but now disaster lies around every corner.

Ecosystem Cycles

There are no noticeable seasons within the Nether and those who only stay briefly might say that it never changes. Those who manage to live there for longer periods disagree. While there aren't any discernable weather or temperature changes to denote seasons, there is a time where it seems to... well grow? Caves that had been well used will suddenly be sealed off, holes will open where solid netherrack stood before, no one knows how or why. But it does seem to occur every so often. No one has been able to keep track. So it's unpredictable. For now.

Localized Phenomena

While each biome might have it's own terrors there are two things you'll find all over the nether;
Fog: Thick and dense this fog prevents you from seeing anything at a distance. You never know what is out there.

Firestorms: A phenomena that occurs beside lava lakes, especially if the shore of the lake buts up to either of the forest biomes. Keep vigilant for changes in temperature, spontaneous combustion or an increased sense of impending doom.

History

Any history of the nether is lost to time or language barriers. The Piglins might have some oral histories but no one has been brave enough to spend enough time with them to attempt any real communication.

Relics scattered across the nether indicate that perhaps at some point it might've been habitable. Or at least more traversable. The numerous ruined portals in what are now bizarre or dangerous areas suggest that it was at one point a central hub of travel.

The huge fossils buried in the soul sand valleys are also curious. Who, or what those bones belonged to is something you can't help but wonder as you pass them.
