Vaudite Species in The Locket | World Anvil

Vaudite

My first idea for the vaudite was 'a demonic satyr-like ghost creatures that haunts buildings and murders people.' It's still pretty accurate, at least in simpler terms.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Vaudite are first born as shapeless energy. As they age, they slowly take the shape of a satyr-like being, with hooves, antlers, tails, and ears. These features vary widely from vaudite to vaudite. Some may have the tail of a wolf, or ears of a rabbit. Others might have the hindquarters of a horse or goat. No two vaudite are the same, as far as the nixans can tell, that is. Few vaudite ever gain a corporeal form.
The corporeal form of a vaudite is still slightly transparent, resistant to most weapons. Most have sharp fangs that allow them to eat their prey. Massive curling horns allow for defense. Other traits vary for each individual vaudite. Some may have more horns, a different tail, different ears, etc.

Genetics and Reproduction

There is only one known case of a vaudite having a child; a young girl by the name of Echo Meira. She is the first known vaudite to be properly born, with her father a vaudite and mother a fae.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Vaudite are generally quintavores, although they prefer meat and energy. They both actively hunt and lie in wait for prey. While formless, they must feed every three days. While corporeal, they must eat daily to sustain their form. They are able to survive without eating another mortalis for quite a while, however. They can survive without food for about seven days before they become weak and start to dissipate. They do not consume souls.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

As most vaudite never live to see anywhere besides their birthplace, they often do have names. Those that do have chosen them for themselves by studying the world around them as best they can.

History

Born as shapeless energy, vaudite form in city buildings of Nix. It is not their choice which building they are bound to, however, they are territorial and will often force the residents out and shut it down. They will attack any who enter.
Unfortunately, the number of vaudite has dwindled as time has gone on. Vaudite must kill thirty-three people within a hundred alatheian years (or, 560 terran years) or they will wither and fade, never to reincarnate. Nixans have learned of their existence and there are measures put in place to make sure they never escape their birthplace. They tend to avoid buildings infested by a formless vaudite, evacuating the moment one is noticed. Only offworlders, excluding Yudryaens, tend to explore such places as Nixans have a subconscious agreement to never let vaudite escape and leave them to perish due to their dangerous nature.
For those few that still manage to escape, they are able to step out of their building, in which they gain their corporeal form. They are able to venture anywhere on the planet, with limitations in that they cannot leave its surface must return at least once every few hundred years to replenish their energy. Even with their dwindling numbers, the vaudite have been around for quite a long time; so long, in fact, that Nixans fear them in name alone. Most are not entirely certain what makes a vaudite so dangerous anymore. They know only that they have been raised to avoid them at all costs.
Although vaudite consume most things, they do not consume souls. Instead, they twist people and creatures into energy and trap their souls in the building of their birthplace. This is rare due to their unnatural lifespan. Once a formless vaudite dies, their birthplace is left for a few years before it is cleansed of any residual energy. A building is also reclaimed a few years after a vaudite escapes, although it is possible for the building to explode, collapse, or burn down once that vaudite dies. Once escaped, vaudite will roam until they find a safe home away from prying eyes. With this in mind, they do tend to stay close to populated areas to have a sustainable food source.

Common Myths and Legends

One Vaudite is known quite well, however, whether she truly exists is another matter altogether. Mylia is said to live within Walker Hitch's establishment, with some claiming they've seen her stalking the halls. It is uncertain how old she is, but what is certain is that she could leave if she chose to. After all, unlike most vaudite, she has not faded from this world.
