Bone bread is a type of food that was developed in Mestrania during the Mestranian War of Royal Claim against Eclania. Cut off from Vechia's resources and with no nearby allies, Mestrania's food supplies were running low, and the majority of the nation's food was going towards soldiers, militia, or contractors. The remaining citizens, though few, were short on resources to make food, and so turned to unconventional sources.
There were many bodies that were piling up, as people's relatives came home from war, or as enemy combatants died separated from their legions. It was soon discovered that blood could be substituted for the much more expensive eggs in baking, and not much longer before people figured out how to create (albeit a bit crunchy) bread from bone.

Appearance

Bone bread appears much whiter than most other kinds of bread, its inside very airy and its crust cracked. The bread is served cold.

Texture

The bread has a brittle-tasting crust, and the interior is mostly air. It is somewhat stringy and very dry, eaten only by the truly desperate.

Taste

Bone bread has a somewhat umami taste to it, though faint. Some describe the taste as similar to mineral-rich water, though less wet.

Bone Bread Rations

The Mestranian military took note of the people's new source of food, and seeing how cheap and easily available its materials were, decided to make use of the bread in soldier's rations. Their form of the bone bread was more akin to a hard, flat, saltine, though it was rarely salted due to the expense of salts.

Grim, but it makes sense. Hopefully the military rations are no longer made from people. XD
