World's Edge Geographic Location in The Last Line | World Anvil

World's Edge

My friend - you remember him, don't you, the inventor? - he took me up in his new-fangled flying machine. And Briqar, you've seen it your whole life, but never like this! A misty line from end to end, on one side the lush blue, on the other side nothing but darkness. It was terrifying.

The World's Edge is the aptly named last stretch of the world before it tumbles into the void. All matter is drawn towards the edge by the Current, slowly destroying cities and continents alike.

Geography

This unsettling precipice is best seen from the four Laslin Cities, which rise from the ocean several hundred meters north. It is comprised of an infinite line of waterfalls stretching from east to west, but best noticed at a distance by the change in the sky's colour to a roiling black.   The seabed north of the falls is significantly lower than elsewhere in the world, as the current draws the floor itself into the void. Underwater is especially hazardous because of this, as the disturbed sand and dirt clouds the water and drags down unfortunate sea life.

History

As far as anyone knows, the world has always had an edge, which has always consumed all life and land before it. It is commonly believed to have been created by either the gods or some malevolent spirit, or otherwise a natural product of the world's formation.   For much of history the edge has both fascinated and frightened, provoking mortals to either flee continually further north or to sail closer to investigate. In the former, these constant shifts and migrations have regularly caused conflict, and in the latter, claimed the lives of each foolhardy adventurer who underestimated the current's strength.   At some point in the last thousand years, large cities were constructed a ways north of the edge, built upon massive pillars driven into the core of the earth itself. These cities, known collectively as Laslin Cities, are some of the few structures capable of withstanding the current, and thus have become the ideal point to observe the edge and to resettle after displacement.   Despite their resilience, the world's edge did eventually claim the city of Taufa in 3256, shattering the city's supports and sending much of it plummeting into the abyss. Many fear for which of the four remaining cities will be next to pass over the falls.

What happens to all the people and places who pass through the World's Edge? Some will say they are simply destroyed, their very essences returned to the gods on high to be reforged and reborn. But colleagues, I find this hard to believe. What justice would there be in such destruction?
No. Based on what my team and I have observed, we think that it is not a destruction, but relocation. A path to another plane of reality, one perhaps hostile to us, but not inherently. With time, and your generous contributions, I believe we may one day find a way to harness the edge and see that world with our very own eyes.
