Old Godfrey

Godfrey is an old half-elf bard that hangs around Arcon’s Tavern. In his younger days, Godfrey traveled around the empire gathering stories and writing his many songs. However, as age caught up with him he decided to seek out a peaceful yet still lively corner of the empire and ended up in Hazegate. In the few years he has been here he picked up more about the town than most locals, a healthy curiosity for a bard. Although he doesn’t play in the tavern, he still instructs the local bards from time to time. Some have even asked Godfrey to help set up a bard’s guild in the city and become its first guild master, an offer that he quickly refuses each time it comes up. The old bard spends most of his time drinking in the tavern and has become close friends with the tavernkeep master Remus.
Godfrey is a cheery fellow who loves telling tails, but he also enjoys swindling people, always trying to get some coin out of his performance no matter how small it might be.
The half-elf is dressed in a colorful attire befitting of a bard. His shirt is green and decorated with gold-colored flowery patterns. His chestnut-brown hair is long and wavy, reaching to his shoulders. Behind his ear, he wears a majestic feather which he claims is from some kind of exotic bird that he encountered on his journeys. Although he doesn’t always carry it with him, Godfrey owns a shamisen and a panflute, which are the two instruments that he plays best. He can play a number of other instruments impressively well too. He usually also carries with him a bag of writing material, such that he can note down any poems or songs that he might think of on the spot.
Players can approach Godfrey to get information about the Hazegate and other parts of Meydia. He doesn’t provide this info for free though, requiring a small donation of 10 gp to speak up. As a veteran bard, he is hard to charm or persuade about his prices, however, he is not the bravest person around so he might budge when intimidated. Of course, the old bard is well-liked, so most patrons would not apricate such treatment towards him. If the party has a bard, Godfrey will pick up on this and challenge them to a flyting match instead of charging the party for the info. The better the bard player performs, the lower the performance check at the end of the flyting match to convince Godfrey. Additionally, if the bard player rolled well enough (this is also affected by the flyting) the old bard will offer to teach them a bard spell. The bard player can return to the tavern at a later time, when it’s not busy, to have Godfrey teach them the spell.
