Morpheel, Warper of Mirrors

Morpheel, the great wyrm-like voidsent that can bend space and reality into reflections of itself. Born from the depths of the abyss, there was a time when this creature shredded the fabric of reality of the in-between realms that bordered the void. It gained the interest of Nentruhn and as a result, it was captured by the fake god to be used as a protective measure in one of its black books. Although but a single aberration once, Nentruhn managed to tear Morpheel into many reflections, just like Morpheel tore many realms.   Moprheel looks like a mixture between a giant eel and sea-serpent. Its skin is covered in black scales with a faint dark-blue coloration. Its face is a giant, circular mouth with sharp teeth pointing inwards. Just inside the mouth is a large dark green eye with a pupil that is as dark as the abyss itself. Three fins trail the top of its body and tentacle-like appendages protrude from just behind its head. The voidsent is intelligent, but its behavior is often sporadic and irrational due to its low wisdom.   Moprheel's layer is the Realm of Mirrors, a subsection of Nentruhn's Realm. The space at first appears like a misty endless void with a crystal surface. Creatures entering the layer will soon find the floor shattering below them, leaving them in free fall. Flying creatures will find their flight failing them the moment they enter free fall and as long as they remain in the Realm of Mirrors. The creatures will land on a large platform much like the floor that previously shattered below them, taking xdx falling damage. They are surrounded by a selfsame misty void. A number of mirror shards float around them, from which Moprheel appears, attacking the invaders. Creatures that enter freefall once again will land on the same platform as if the space is looping around. If the platform has been shattered, creatures will instead land on a new platform. In both cases, the creatures take the same amount of fall damage again. Killing Moprheel will cause the space to return to the state before the floor shattered. Additionally, the exit, whatever it may be, will appear within sight of the creatures.

Traits

  • Conjurer of Mirrors: Morpheel is able to conjure up large mirror-like shards. Usually, these shards act as proper mirrors. Morpheel may dive into one of these mirrors, this costs it half its movement to accomplish. Doing so causes all shards to become translucent, no longer creating a reflection. Morpheel seems to almost entirely disappear in the shard it dived into, only its eye reminding. While inside one of the shards, Morpheel is automatically hidden and has resistance to all damage. It can freely move between shards at the end of a creature's turn, including its own. It is possible to forcefully draw Morpheel out of the shards by destroying the shard it is currently residing in, leaving it stunned until the start of its next turn. This also destroys all the remaining mirror shards. A creature may discover which shard Morpheel inhibits by making a Perception check contested by Moprheel's stealth roll it made upon entering a shard. For every shard broken, Morpheel's stealth roll is reduced by 2. Each shard has x hit points, is immune to Poison and Psychic damage, and is vulnerable to Thunder damage.
  • True Mind: Morpheel cannot be affected by Illusion spells or effects.
  • Magic Resistance: Morpheel has advantage on saving throws made against spell effects/
  • Exposed State: When taking the Maw or Consume action, Morpheel's eye becomes vulnerable to all damage, except Psychic and Poison. When being hit in its eye, Morpheel must make a concentration saving throw or miss its attack and must forcefully move away 10 ft. from its target.
  • Multiaction: Morpheel may take two actions on its turn, one of which must be a Bash, Maw, or Divide and Shatter action.

Actions

  • Bash: Melee Weapon Attack: +x to hit, 15ft.-wide 5ft.-long square. Hit: x (xdx + x) Bludgeoning damage. Moprheel bashes part of its body against all creatures in range. Each creature must succeed on a DC x Strength saving throw or take x (xdx + x) bludgeoning damage and gets pushed back 10 ft. and fall prone. On a successful safe, a creature still takes half damage and gets knocked back 5 ft., but does not fall prone.
  • Maw: Melee Weapon Attack: +x to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: x (xdx + x) Piercing damage. Moprheel bites down on a target, exposing its eye in the process.
  • Warp: As a bonus action, Morpheel may teleport to any unoccupied location within 40 ft.
  • Shatter Being: Moprheel warps reality at the location of a creature with 30 ft., dominating the creature's attachment to reality to shatter part of its existence. The targeted create must succeed on a DC x Intelligence saving throw or take x (xdx + x) True damage. On a successful save, the creature still takes half damage. If the creature fails the save by more than half the DC, it is paralyzed until the end of its next turn.
  • Divide Creature (recharge 3-5 rounds): Moprheel attempts to tear the existence of a creature in two. The targetted creature must make a DC x Intelligence saving throw. If it fails, it will be duplicated and both its versions are moved away from the creature's original position in a random direction to the nearest unoccupied space. The creature will perceive itself through both its bodies and whenever making any kind of action or movement, it does so identically with both bodies. All damage and effects are shared between the bodies. While split, the creature has disadvantage on attack rolls, ability checks, and Dexterity saving throws. At the end of its turn, the creature may repeat the Intelligence saving throw to return to normal, selecting one body to determine its location.
  • Conjure Mirrors: Moptheel conjures up to x mirror shards in a 120 ft. area around it.
  • Divide and Shatter: Ranged Weapon Attack: +x to hit, reach 120 ft., one target. Hit: x (xdx + x) Piercing + x (xdx + x) Force damage. Moprheel creates a duplicate of one of its mirror shards and shatters it, hurling its pieces at a creature in range. Roll a d6, on 1 the original shard shatters and is destroyed. Moprheel may not use the action using the shard it currently resides in.

Legendary Actions

Morpheel can take a total of 3 legendary actions each round.
  • Bash
  • Maw
  • Divide and Shatter
  • Warp (2 actions): Moprheel uses its warp action and may move up to half its speed.
  • Conjure Reflection (2 actions): Morpheel creates an illusion of itself in each of its mirror shards. Creatures attempting to make a Perception check to determine Moprheel's location while it is in the shards do so with disadvantage.
  • Consume (3 actions, recharge 4-8 rounds): Morpheel charges at a creature of medium size or smaller; opening its jaw wide. The pupil of its eye grows large and in its blackness appears a void filled with teeth. A targeted creature must succeed on a DC x Dexterity saving throw or be consumed by Moprheel, taking x (xdx + x) Magical Piercing damage. Creatures of size small or below have disadvantage on the safe. On a successful safe, the creature does not get consumed and only takes half damage. Consumed creatures are transported to an alternate space where sharp teeth slice their flesh. A consumed creature is Paralysed and takes x (xdx + x) Magical Slashing damage. The creature can make a DC x Intelligence saving throw to release itself from the alternative space. If it succeeds, it reappears prone and stunned until the end of its turn at a random unoccupied location within 120 ft. is the spot where it got consumed. Attempting to consume a creature will expose Morpheel's eye.

Lair Actions

  • First Appearance: At the start of a combat encounter, whenever Morpheel is in its layer, it will engage invaders from its mirror shards. It will appear out of this mirror shard and is able to make one Bash, Maw, or Divide and Shatter action.
  • Veil of Mind Fracturing: The Realm of Mirrors produces a veil of magical energy that exudes extreme pressure on a creature's mind. Each creature inside the layer must succeed on a DC x Wisdom saving throw or fall victim to the veil's effect. Creatures affected by the veil have disadvantage on Intelligence saving throws and Intelligence skill and ability checks. A creature that succeeds on the safe is immune to the veil's effect for the next 24 hours. Creatures that leave the Realm of Mirrors will stop being affected by the veil immediately but will suffer its effects again upon entering the layer. Affected creatures may repeat the Wisdom saving throw at the start of their turn.
  • Shatter Arena: Moprpheel dives into the large shard that invading creatures are standing on, attempting to shatter it. The first time it does so, it creates large cracks in the platform, and all creatures on it take x (xdx + x) Thunder damage. Doing so a second time shatters the platform, causing all creatures on it to enter free fall. Morpheel will reappear near the invaders at the end of the turn using its warp ability.
