Mimic Hoard
A Mimic Hoard disguises itself as a large pile or multiple piles of treasure. It can strike out with tentacles hidden below the coins that constitute its body. The treasure chests appearing on the piles act as mouths for the creature, reflecting normal mimics. Not all the treasure of the mimic horde is fake; the creature often coats itself with items of value carried by its victims. It likely does so to look even more authentic. Treasure from the pile can be picked up, yet most items tend to be coated in a viscous fluid. This coating becomes slimier if someone would dig deeper into the pile. Mimic hordes prefer to lie in wait longer than most mimics in order to ensure that they can capture entire groups of creatures rather than just the first creature that dives into the treasure piles.
Traits
- Shapechanger: The mimic can use its action to polymorph into an object or back into its true, amorphous form. Its statistics are the same in each form. Any equipment it is wearing or carrying isn't transformed. It reverts to its true form if it dies.
- Adhesive (Object Form Only): The mimic adheres to anything that touches it. A Gargantuan or smaller creature adhered to the mimic is also grappled by it (escape DC 14). Ability checks made to escape this grapple have disadvantage.
- False Appearance (Object Form Only): While the mimic remains motionless, it is indistinguishable from an ordinary object.
- Grappler: The mimic has advantage on attack rolls against any creature grappled by it.
- Shifting Body: Because the mimic's body is made of loose sitting objects, it is difficult to climb it. As such, tiles occupied by the mimic count as difficult. Additionally, creatures that spend a long time standing in the same location of the mimic will slowly sink into the treasure pile. A creature that ends two turns in a row on the same spot of the mimic will slightly sink into the mimic, becoming prone.
- Hidden Core: The mimic has one hidden core that is usually kept in a locked chest. Attacking the core directly multiplies damage done to the mimic by 5 and ignores the mimic's resistances. To open the chest that contains the core, either 30 damage must be done to it in total or a creature must succeed on a DC 16 Strength check to force it open. The chest does not share the mimic's resistances.
- Multiattack: The mimic can make 3 attacks each turn. However, each of its "mouths" can only perform 1 bite attack per turn.
Actions
- Pseudopod: Melee Weapon Attack, +8 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 21 (3d10 + 5) bludgeoning damage. If the mimic is in object form, the target is subjected to its Adhesive trait.
- Tendril Movement: As a bonus action the mimic can move up to 3 creatures that are grappled due to its Pseudopod action. This movement can go up to 10 feet.
- Coin Toss: Ranged Weapon Attack: +1 to hit, range 30/60 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (3d6 + 1) bludgeoning damage.
- Bite: Melee Weapon Attack, +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 21 (3d10 + 5) piercing damage plus 16 (3d10) acid damage. If the target is a Medium or smaller creature, it must succeed on a DC 16 Dexterity saving throw or be swallowed by the mimic. A swallowed creature is blinded and restrained, it has total cover against attacks and other effects outside the mimic, and it takes 14 (4d6) acid damage at the start of each of the mimic's turns. The mimic can only perform this attack against a creature that is within 5 feet of one of its chest mouths. If the mimic takes 15 damage or more on a single turn from a creature inside it, the mimic must succeed on a DC 21 Constitution saving throw at the end of that turn or regurgitate all swallowed creatures, which fall prone in a space within 10 feet of the mimic. If the mimic dies, a swallowed creature is no longer restrained by it and can escape from the corpse by using 20 feet of movement, exiting prone.
