Bone Jelly

Bone Jellies are small types of slimes that can most commonly be found in subterranean areas inhabited by larger creatures. The jellies get their name from feeding on bone marrow. These slimes take in pieces of bone and absorb them, slowly digesting the marrow. As a result, the bones that are being digested can act as a type of armor, protecting the slime.   Bone Jellies are transparent white and are relatively small in size. The slimes are very docile, rarely ever showing signs of aggression. Even when threatened, they prefer to flee and hide rather than to engage. The only exception to this is when they are in a large group and detect a sizeable source of uncorroded bone marrow. For some reason, these creatures go into a frenzy when presented with a fresh meal, endangering their own well-being in pursuit of their target. This behavior is only displayed when a small group of their kind is also around.  

Traits

  • Bone armor: A bone jelly may gain an armor bonus from the bones it is digesting, increasing its AC by at most 3.
  • Feeding frenzy: When presented with a sizeable source of fresh bone marrow, as long as there are at least 2 other jellies within 60 feet, the bone jelly will mindlessly attack an opponent to get to these bones as if in a frenzy. While in this state, the bone jelly is immune to any attempt made to frighten, scare, or otherwise intimidate it.
  • Merger: A group of bone jellies can merge together, increasing in size. For each size they increase, the new creature’s health is the sum of all source jellies’ hp, their attack damage increases by one die type, and their physical stats increase by 2. Additionally, the new AC bonus provided by bone armor is equal to the average bonus of the previous slimes, rounded up. Three jellies of at least even size must merge together to increase in size.
  • Amorphous: The jelly can move through a space as narrow as 1 inch wide without squeezing.
  • Spider Climb: The jelly can climb difficult surfaces, including upside down on ceilings, without needing to make an ability check.

  • Pseudopod: Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 2d6 +2 bludgeoning damage plus 1d6 acid damage.
 

Reaction

  • Split: When a jelly that is Small or larger is subjected to slashing damage, it splits into two new jellies if it has at least 10 hit points. Each new jelly has hit points equal to half the original jelly's, rounded down. New jellies are one size smaller than the original jelly. The jelly, before splitting, only takes half damage from the attack after applying mitigations.
