Sesssion 64: Stories in the Deep

General Summary

After battling the Barlguras (see Session 63: Libre Mortis is no more ), the heroes further explored the Greater Caverns. An elongated cavern nearby was the home of several Galeb Duhrs. These elementals typically avoid confrontation, but they must be enspelled for they attacked the heroes with roll-charges, bludgeoning stone arms, and animated stones. Several charges brought Jolee Bindo near to death and afte battle he used a found-potion hoping for health, but the Potion of Poison almost destroyed the old man. The party then sought refuge for a time in a corner of the caverns.

Later, delving further, they arrived to a mushroom and lichen floored chamber with stone ledges along the curved walls to the stalactite ceiling. Jolee stepped in and scanned the ledges. Insects and vermim scrambled away on the floor and a deep, reptilian voice fell from above: "and what are you doing in the domain of Lludd?" Thus began a conversation with the giant behir, who seemed interested in the adventurers ... as more than a meal. He certainly seemed unconcerned of any threat and treated Jolee and his companions to some lore of the cavnerns, tales of explorers and treasure hunters seeking the Witch Queen's horde, and that of her daughters. Lludd the Magnificent spoke of a crusading Paladin of Heironeous who legend recounts as being entombed within the caves. Truth? Falsity? Lludd's advice: move toward the centre.

Leaving Lludd, with promise to return and gift him a watercolour, Mi'tsuru'gi led his companions past a Receiving Room to a massive sloped chamber, wet walls draining into a central hole. As they crept towards the hole, Rivine used her Boots of Levitation, and anchored by a rope, floated above the hole and peered down. The hole plunged to black and there were strange claw marks on the walls. As she pondered this, Umber Hulks attacked from piles of rubble! Rivine pulled herself back to the ground as her friends joined battle. As one of the creatures was defeated, a third emerged from the hole, but even this reinforcement was eventually destroyed with his bretheren.

While Mitsu field dressed an Umber Hulk, Rivine examined the walls of the cavern. Coming upon a hollow sounding stone, she knocked off a covering that hid a strange carving. Incised upon the stone walls using no earthly craft was a picture of Iggwilv standing, arms outstretched and encompasing two women. On the right, a woman with the same facial structure and bearing of Iggwilv. On the left, a woman clad in plate, the lightening bolt of Heironeous across her chest, and drawing her sword as she looks up at the Witch. The depiction entire thrummed with transmutation magics. As all stared at the image, Mi'tsuru'gi traced his fingers across Iggwilv's spiked crown and down her arms to a ring encircling her second figure, a depiction of Grazz't's five-fingered hand upon the ring. As he touched the carving the ring rotated around the finger and a voice spoke from the carving: beware Grazz't's curse. At this the magic faded from the carving and it became dull to look upon.

Confused by this warning and the depiction itself, the heroes retreated again to their corner-cavern to rest and ponder.
