A dull thumping followed by a reptilian preening noise broke the desert heat. The desert blew sand and glass particles into his eyes as he gazed forward. He covered his mouth with the coarse shawl draped over his shoulder. In the distance, a flash from a reflection of light signified that the caravan he was leading, was at last approaching the glass temple Sia-den-ker.
Lythrim's covered eyes shifted to the dunes to either side of him and he noticed the barest hint of sand trickling down the steep slopes. A dull thump sounded penetrated through the dune to his left and he raised his hand to signal the caravan to a halt. They were as close as they would safely be able to get.
He knelt down and gently set a filled waterskin upon the ground and then stepped back. At once two thumps sounded and a large lizard hurdled over the dune and landed before the waterskin. Two figures wrapped tightly in cloth dismounted. One stood before us and watched, completely at ease and in peace. The other took the skin nd uncorked it. Swiftly smelling and ensuring it was water only, it turned to the lizard and poured the water into its mouth until just the smallest remnants of water remained. It pulled its wrap off its head revealing a leathery face, with thin nostrils and a tight mouth. It turned its dark brown eyes to us and proceeded to drink the last drops of water. When finished it joined the other watcher and the two parties stood like that for 5 minutes, unmoving. Abruptly the first figure made a quick series of clicks and the lizard thumped its overly large feet on the ground creating a noise similar to what was heard earlier. As one the remaining warriors hidden behind the high dunes rose and thumped in return as 15 heads peeked out from behind them. The first figure approached. "Your water is crisp and clear. Welcome to _______."
