Canopus-4

Canopus-4 is the 4th planet orbiting the F-type star Canopan. It is the planet that the Canopans have settled, and terraformed.

Geography

Canopus-4 had a very thick atmosphere. Only it's highest mountain peaks rose high enough that hte atmosphere was thin enough to justify human colonization. The planet is also larger, and denser than Earth, therefore, the gravity of Canopus-4 is slightly higher than earths, which has affected the Canopans over the last 400 years.   An intensive terraforming effort eventualy thinned the corrosive atmosphere and reduced the pressure and heat to the point where humans could expand into the more fertile slopes and valleys.

History

It was settled by the Canopans in the mid 26th century by old reckoning. Canopus-4 proved to be a particularly difficult world to colonize, giving rise to a stubborn, self-reliant human civilization.   Early in the terraforming process, an accidental chemical reaction in the atmospheric cleansing operation wiped out 90% of the colonists. Later, within a few generations their world was nearly devastated by a significant asteroid impact. The survivors of those twin calamities prized caution and personal fortitude, attitudes that mark their civilization to the present day.
