Artificial intelligence
Artificial intelligence was a major step forward for space exploration before the Canopans discovered a way for humans to survive in hyperspace. These artificial robots were the first explorers of the galaxy, and made first contact with many species before humans could travel in hyperspace.
Artificial beings with artificial intelligence require Asimov Circuits on most regulated worlds. These circuits prohibit the being from causing, or by inaction allowing, harm to come to sentient beings. This makes many robots pacifists.
A common misconception among biological sentients is all robots have limited intelligence. It's better to assume humanoid ones have a full AI, and even feelings.

The Asimov circuits can be disabled by the manufacturer, or modified if needed. For example, soldiers, or security robots need to be able to harm, or kill their enemies. Usually the circuits are modified to allow harming specifically designated enemies, while protecting everyone else.

Unlike in ancient science fiction, a logic paradox will not disable an AI.
