Royal Order of the Serpent

The Royal Order of the Serpent is an organization of investigators and masters in the mystic arts whose goal is to watch out for signs of the return or works of the Sorceress.
The Sorceress is (and was) an exceedingly powerful mage and a well of malice. She was a prime opponent of the Prophet and one of the main leaders of the Hursan Imperial forces during the War of Liberation. Following her apparent death, she used her magic to either reincarnate herself or possess a living person (the Order isn't sure which occurred) to be reborn. She them spent the succeeding decades cultivating a circle of influence within the upper echelons of the Empire's ruling elite and pushing them to wage war with the Kingdom. This ended after the Fourth and Final Hursan War ended in her current body being slain and the Hursan Empire being dismantled and partially annexed by the Kingdom. In response to the Sorceress' clear capabilities, King Ntiklon Lagivu Gloinēs ordered (and organized) the creation of a group of hunters and investigators to watch over the Kingdom and its surrounds for further works of the Sorceress and her manipulations.
The Royal Order of the Serpent is granted immense power and privileges by direct order of the King. The Order is allowed access to any records from any source, permitted to investigate any individual of the realm for any hint of the Sorceress' works or influence and such rights are extended to the vassal states of the Kingdom. Most of the Kingdom's allies allow the Royal Order to function in their lands, though they do not have quite the sweeping authority as they have in the Kingdom and must coordinate with the allied government. The Royal Order can arrest any individual found to have indisputable evidence of collaboration with the Sorceress and can place them in a trial under the oversight of the King.
