Ring of Nations

One voice that speaks for a hundred countries

Since even before the Gap, the Ring of Nations has governed Verces' Temperate Zone. While each component country maintains theoretical independence, in practice the coalition forms a single worldwide government, with representatives from each country participating in the planetary Grand Assembly(link).

History

  1. The Stewards were created to guard the various nations that joined the Ring of Nations. They were given the jurisdiction to cross the borders into any country that had signed the pact to join.
  2. 41AG: The Absalom Pact is signed and the Ring of Nations joins the Pact Worlds. They offer the success of the Stewards to grow from serving the planet to serving the system. Their offer is accepted.

Foreign Relations

Several smaller self-proclaimed 'kingdoms' dot Fullbright and Darkside. They are collectively known as the Outlaw Kingdoms and ignored, except for when the occasional raiding party goes too far.

Agriculture & Industry

All across Temperate Zone, red gardens can be found on various levels of the city. This is part of an initiative by the Ring of Nations where food-providing crops may be grown in return for a discount on taxes, transport and other government-provided services. The benefits of the service fluctuate based on the demand for the local food but have thus far kept the unemployment rates low - farming is rarely a glamorous job, and the benefits provided only allow for a minimum of comfortable living.

Another common industry is that of Sun Farms, small houses (or sometimes even villages) venturing out sunwards to harvest the intense heat of the day into solar panels and channelled back to the nearest city. The practise is proving to be increasingly popular with Verthani exploited one too many times, but not yet ready to give up their traditions as they go to live the rest of their lives in quiet semi-retirement far away from manipulative legal folk and greedy corporations.
Most Verthani don't go far, however, as they have manufactured several pipelines with which to funnel their produce back. Other, more intense farmers that choose to go out further must make a "sales run"; a mad dash across open ground where they are easy targets for raiders and citizens of the various Outlaw Kingdoms - and often leaving their homes and livelihoods undefended while they do so.

Trade & Transport

Many of the different countries specialise in a different product, all of which is transported across the Rails - or in the case of Skydock, along a space elevator. Other goods, such as cybernetics to be sent offworld are sent from the many docking yards found in each city.

The Temperate Zone is a very successful participant in the Pact Worlds, but it is not without its faults. The Outlaw Kingdoms are a constant reminder that the Ring of Nations controls only a fraction of the planet's surface, and that more and more of the valued Verthani that set the foundation of this society are leaving every day. Black market cybernetics, drugs farmed in the barren wastelands of both Fullbright and Darkside are shipped out of atmosphere from docks that are little more than a smooth patch of dust.

As with all Pact World planets, the Stewards have authority here. However, only one is assigned to each city - except for in the case of Nabokon, where a Steward Captain coordinates their agents across the world.

Otherwise, simple law enforcement agents stand guard to assist citizens. They are rarely trained in combat due to the terrifying power they wield in a small comm unit - a simple press of a button activates one of billions of Nanotech Golems(link) kept in an inert state all across Temperate Zone to provide the combat prowess needed to subdue a threat.
