Hylian Cosmology

How Hylians View the World

If one could touch upon the world more than they think, they would realize they touch upon the world too much already.

A World Faceted

To the various peoples of Hyrule, the world appears the same. Stark, imposing mountains overlooking gently windswept plains along placid lakes and vigorous rivers. But to those that search the ancient texts and keep an eye out for lost carvings, they only just begin to turn the world over in their hands.   Hyrule, it would appear, is actually built on a variety of realms. The first that all people seem to be cognizant of is that of the Materia Realm. Religious scholars of course then add the Golden Realm, or resting place of the gods, and begining in the late Age of Exploration, began to discuss the existence of the first of two competing realms, kept in balance by the Materia; the Light Realm and the Dark Realm. Though rare, a few texts do point to these two realms actually being versions of each other, with neither existing concurrently to the other. These them make up the realms of Spirit and tie to the morality or goodness of the people.   However, more physical realms are told of in myth and legend, places that exist and can be accessed by specific means or persons. Around the time of the Hylian Civil War, a twisted tale of a world further splintered than Hyrule arose, with that realm being called Termina. Further realms appear during the post-Civil War era, such as Lorule, a direct mirror of Hyrule, the Dream Sea, which supposedly houses ancient beings, and the Twilight Realm, from which various tales of Boogeymen and tricksters arise. Less well known or even documented are ancient places tied to specific tales. These include the Everlasting Field and the Spirit Realm. Those few that study these realms state trouble in determining exactly what they were, and if they are somehow connected to each other, let alone to the other known realms.

Accessing the Realms

According to most scholars and theologians, the world of Hyrule, the Materia Realm, has hundreds of gateways to the other realms. The most notorious is the Light or Dark Realms, visited via control of the Triforce of the Gods. Originally known as the Sacred Realm, this holy place fractured with the first successful attempt by Ganon at possessing the Triforce. His corrupted heart twisted the Sacred Realm into a dark world of greed and monsters.   Others, like the Twilight Realm, were once accessible via Artifact Gates. For the Twilight, this was the Mirror of Twilight, which was shattered by the Twili Princess Midna.
