Fortune's cuisine

The town of Fortune, by virtue of its nature as an oceanfaring town, has a uniquely limited cuisine. Being so far out in the deep ocean, there are few fish in the local waters, meaning the only local source of food is the Megaflorica that Fortune is built on.   Due to the town's erratic movements, the town is sometimes cut off from resupply for weeks or months. Therefore, the town maintains a large reserve of food in long term storage, primarily in the form of canned food and hardtack. A large supply of salt pork, dried meats, pickled cabbage, and other traditional sailing foods round out this reserve.   Fresh food is in high demand for the town's thriving black market. This is an unofficial trade of the oil and tea produced from the Megaflorica for various goods and luxuries not provided by regular shipments from the Tulwood High Seas Company. Fresh and canned fruit is always included in regular supplies, as it has long since been recognized for its capacity to stave off scurvy, but unsalted meat, flour for fresh bread, sugar, honey and a variety of herbs and spices are in short enough supply that they are highly favoured in these deals. However, it is fairly rare for these luxuries to be made available to everyone in Fortune; such supplies are generally first made available to people working in management roles.   The thing that most stands out as Fortune cuisine is the salty Megaflorica Tea. Produced from fronds cut from the Megaflorica (largely as a byproduct of exposing the bulbs that produce the oil, this tea has grown extremely popular among the working people of Fortune, many of whom drink at least a cup at every meal. The tea is said to be extremely stimulating; those who drink it report feeling much more awake and energized than those who take water or ordinary tea. Some of Fortune's medical professionals have raised concerns over this effect, pointing out that certain medications can have a similar effect at low doses but can be addictive and possibly life threatening when taken at higher doses. However, management is quite happy with the result of a more energized and enthusiastic workforce, and is quite happy to provide as much tea as their workers desire. Surplus tea is also popular with some traders, with whom it fetches a price nearly as high as for the oil that brought them in the first place.
