Scope
The motivation behind building The Hollow Moons
Alven is the world where my fantasy series will take place.
It is also a world I would like to develop for DnD 5e homebrew campaigns.
The goal of the project
As I was writing the first part of my novel, I noticed that I was not able to describe with great accuracy or originality the character's surroundings. This is what spurred me to join WorldAnvil and 'create' the world where my characters will evolve, and the action will take place.
The Hollow Moons's Unique Selling point
I think what makes my world different is the setting.
Alven is a Celtic society which has evolved from the bronze age without the influence of Christianity.
At the time the books are written, the Alven civilization is reaching the age of 'Enlightenment' and is pre-industrial in its nature.
It is also my goal to twist and reinvent Scottish (mainly) and Celtic mythology to explain the magic present in the world.
Theme
Genre
The world of Alven is a mix of gritty and adventure fantasy.
The series I am writing also includes elements present in detective stories.
The main character of the series, Flora, is looking to solve several mysteries, including who killed her husband.
Reader Experience
The world should feel at the same time wondrous, mystical, and present.
I think it will be the juxtaposition of 'gritty' and real-like elements with more surreal and magical components which will keep the reader engrossed in the story - some of the 'feels' might verge on Gothic horror at times.
However, I would like to keep the action and the fun vibes of an adventure quest at the same time.
Reader Tone
The tone of the novel will be grey - grey morality and grey characters. Characters will each have their arc and will end up a different person than they started.
Recurring Themes
The themes I would like to explore throughout the novel:
the uncertain nature of human relationships
the power within (faced with what fate hands us)
vengeance, betrayal and love and loyalty
Character Agency
Flora will have at the start of her story some agency in the world of Alven. This agency will grow throughout the series as she gets entangled in the political and magical world around her.
Focus
I plan to use the Nanowrimo and Worldember challenges to focus on the following articles:
main geographical articles on the seven regions of Alven: economic strength and political data
articles on the organizations, clans, and guilds who make up the power base of Alven
the non-human sentient beings of Alven (mainly magical creatures from Celtic mythology)
the Celtic pantheon of Alven and its Religion as opposed to the scientific guilds of the Enlightenment
the calendar, main celebrations in Alven (based on the Celtic calendar and the two moons circling the Alven skies)
a brief timeline and history of Alven, including the story of the Clans
Drama
The main drama in the first book of the Alven series revolves around Flora, chieftain of the Deerwoolf clan in the region of Farden. She sees herself and her family forced out of the ancestral clan lands when the keep is taken over by the neighbouring Ramshead clan.
On the day of her flight from Denholm keep, Flora learns that her husband Mistral, who disappeared six years ago after leaving on a mission for the then Thane, might be alive. She vows to find her husband and reclaim her lands.
To do this, she will need first to regain the Rod of Power, a magical weapon of mass destruction, who belongs to her family and has been lost or stolen.
The family Power Rod was last seen in the repository of magical artifacts guarded by the Archive - the Archive is an army of librarians, archivists, and seers who keep order throughout Alven for the Thane.
The invasion of Flora's lands plays against the background of the election of a new Thane, and the Archive who is not supposed to take sides is not playing fair ...
Without saying too much here, Flora will find more than she bargains for, meets many foes and friends on her journey, and will come out from her ordeals a changed woman.
