History and Discovery
Eyeglasses have been part of Alven culture for centuries. No one knows who invented the eyeglass, but Antiquarians have been collecting very ancient glasses dating back 500 years.The most famous antique eyeglasses in existence can be seen at The Repository in Hollyholm. The Golden Eyeglass of Medua has been named thus as it was found in a now ruined and abandoned temple of the goddess in the nearby town of Medholly.
The glasses are meant to be handheld and sport beautiful detailed motives throughout.
Modern Advances
In modern Alven, eyeglasses are now worn on one's nose and are held by metal branches that can be tucked behind the ears.The range of eyeglasses being produced in Alven is very wide: eyeglasses can become fashion statements, with very ornate 'wings' above the lenses and jeweled pendants hanging from the branches or are made of the cheapest of metal.
The quality of the lenses will also vary depending on what type of glass one can afford.
Lately, The Stargazer and Alchemists have devoted their time creating more and more powerful lenses to watch the skies and the natural world at large. The advances in this domain have produced better quality lenses for everyone.
Trade and Availability
Finding a good pair of eyeglasses very much depends on your physical location in Alven. If you live near the capital or one of the bustling trace centers of the clanlands, there is an ever chance that you will be able to purchase a good pair of eyeglasses at a reasonable price.However, the people who live away from the urban centers, mainly in the northern parts of the country, might not have the same access to the new-fangled technology of the cosmopolitan south.
It might be more difficult, let's say in the north of Cauldfell or Farden, to get hold of a decent pair. Apothecaries are usually the shops where you can buy a good of pair eyeglasses. For cheaper glasses, there are always The Ambulant Men who can supply (usually illegally) a vast array of 'medicinal' goods.
