The Demon in Our Midst

Goal

The Demon in Our Midst is a popular parlour game in The Eastern Isles. It is played in many homes during the winter - well those who can afford paper, parchment and ink. It can also be played on sand if there is no paper and ink available.

The goal of the game is to draw bit by bit, one player at a time, a monster or a dragon from scratch.
Once everyone had had a chance to draw part of the monster, the piece of paper is unfolded to reveal the 'beast'.

Rules

A piece of paper is folded a certain way and labelled head, torso, front legs, back legs, tail and other. If more than six players are taking part in the game, the game master can add a more 'parts' to the monster.

Players roll a dice or choose what part of the monster they would like to draw. On their turn, they will draw the part of the monster or dragon they have been designated to create.

A player can only take a maximum of five minutes to draw their creature's limbs before passing it on to the next player.
Colours can be added to the drawing before the five minutes are passed.

Once every player has drawn a part of the beast, it is revealed to everyone in the room. Players would not have been aware of what has been drawn from other players, and the effect is usually hilarious.

History

The Demon in Our Midst became a very popular game during the late Thane's tenure. The Thane himself being a very good draughtsman enjoyed taking part in the drawing of the 'mythical' beasts.

It is said that he kept the best drawings in a special folder, and had one framed to be put up on the wall of his private bathroom.

On the other hand, some religious sects, such as The Order or the Sacred Shadow, forbid their believers and members to play such games.

Members of the sect believe that drawing a monster or a dragon could actually summon that said creature from The Underworld. They will castigate anyone being so frivolous as to invent such monstrosities in the first place.
