The Banemongers

The Banemongners are one of the hidden factions of The Ambulant Men - Alven's most powerful illicit and shadow organizations. The Banemongers' specialty is the production and selling of potions and magic philters throughout the main urban centers of Alven.

The Banemongers have secret Workshop in the following places: Highfort and Hollyholm. However, the guild members have been known to travel and take commissions all over the country.

Trade and Markets

The Banemongers' shelves offer products for every burse. The deadly poisons are not in general offered to everyone and cost a small fortune. In the lowest bracket, one can find love potions and philters, contraceptive draughts, aphrodisiacs, insecticides, etc.

These products are freely available and constitute a huge portion of the guild's daily trade. However, The Grand Chemist and the Ambulant Men at large will also take at times darker assignment for considerably larger sums of money. It is said they have trained Banemonger on their payroll who can remove your unwanted people.

Structure

The Banemongers follow the same hierarchical structures as any other guilds within the Company of the Ambulant Men.

The Grand Chemist

The head of the Banemongers is called the Grand Chemist and his  or her identity is kept secrets from everyone in the guild. He or She is is part of the Seven who are the executive head of the Ambulant organization.

The Alchemists

Underneath the Grand Chemist, you would find the Alchemists. The Alchemists head individual workshops where the concoctions are prepared. The workshop also stores the rare and expensive ingredients needed for some of the potions and philters.

Only the Grand Chemist is aware of how many workshops are currently active and their whereabouts. Even the Alchemists do not know the identity of the Grand Chemist. Communication is achieved by writing: notebooks are placed in strategic places by Blind Couriers throughout the town.

Orders and instructions are delivered this way to all the workshops. This means that even if Archivists manage to arrest everyone working in a workshop, they are not able to find out the locations of the others or apprehend the head of the organization.

The Guilders

Guilders is the general term for any member of the Company. Guilders are by nature very discreet and loyal and will never mention their affiliation to anyone else. For their protection, many guilders do not even mention their employers to their families.

A guilder will not know many other members of the Company - just the people he or she might be working with within their workshop. Secrecy, loyalty, and discretion are verything to a guilder: the Ambulant Men provide a well-remunerated job, but it is a very dangerous one.

If caught, a guilder can see his family banned from the clan they belong to and exiled. A guilder would themselves be sent to work in the Thane's road gangs.

The Apprentice Boys

Many young apprentices start as couriers for the Company. An apprentice will have been brought up since sometimes the age of 6 into the Way of the Men and proven their worth and cunning by not getting caught.
Around the age of 12, their talents would have been assessed and the lucky ones would become apprenticed to a workshop under the protection of an Alchemist.

After  five years of training or so, the apprentice would become a fully-fledged Guilder, and be assured of a salary. Salaries are based on skills and productivity.

The Couriers

Many boys and girls in the bustling cities of Alven and Hollyholm start their career with the Company of Ambulant Men as a courier for the society. Couriers will have 'handlers' who are older guildsmen in charge of the network of communication so crucial to the functioning of the organization.

Again, couriers will be attached to a workshop and will not work for any other person than their handler. If a courier does not become a guilder, they can carry on with the job throughout their life, depending on the needs of their handler.

Being a courier is a very dangerous job. If caught, sanctions are very harsh: prison, exile, road gangs.
However, many young boys and girls born in the poorest suburbs of Highfort will be tempted by the Company life and the incentives it offers them: remuneration, sense of identity etc.
