"To hear her song, the internal rhythm by which we move. The glory in which we exist, the subtle timber of creation. A symphony we bend our ears to, to hear your voice with every fiber of our being. It simply must be heard, the lullabye you sang to us while we slept in your arms. Now we seek to understand the loving words you spoke, to grow closer. To sing your song, where the crystal chimes echo out in time with the sound of our voice. Pray tell, dearest Great Mother, why do you sing?"

History

As time moved forward, the Brownies grew to understand their nature to a higher degree. They understood they were true Children of Vilorlith, that the music that chimed softly in their ears while they slept was her voice. Early on before Villy had taken a corporeal form, she existed as a force, or forces. She would still attempt to guide her fledgling children through their lives, giving signs rather than directed guidance as she would later on. As all The Quartet would eventually, she being the Divine Creator of sound, music and air, she would continuously sing to her children.

The Brownies were not ignorant to this fact, they understood that they were being told something. But, as with all children, we rarely ever listen to the words of our mothers until much later on. They explored their powers, learning they had many of the same abilities as this force they chose to worship as their goddess. Without realizing what they were worshipping was truly a god, let alone their actual creator. They had developed a practice to attempt to hear this music more.

Their temples were built to amplify sound, to harmonize with certain frequencies, to silence all outside noise of the world. They exalted themselves to this song they all heard, some obsessing over it, many simply finding comfort in it. This song they strove to understand more and more, they would eventually get their wish.

When Vilorlith had taken on the variation of the form the Brownies themselves wore, she chose to walk among her children. Explaining the song they heard was her, explaining what they were, elaborating their place in the universe the Quartet had made for them. She stayed with them as the other races came to their world, and followed them as they expanded throughout countless galaxies.

As they grew and changed with her, so too did she. Growing closer to her children, she taught them more. In the historic event that amplified the Brownies far beyond what the others of the Quartet had planned, their listening ritual changed.

From one of solace and comfort, it turned to one of understanding and comprehension. The song took on a wholly different meaning, they understood the purpose. The song was how Vilorlith had made the universe, how magic worked, how their power worked, how reality functioned. They listened and understood the song more than enjoyed it, the deeper they listened the more they understood, the more they understood her teachings the closer they came to ascension.

The more they delved into Vilorlith's song the more powerful they became, the more they became one with the universe made for them, the closer to the birthright godhood they were gifted. This made them targets though, as the War with the Shadows kicked off, their power made them horrifying vessels for the Shadows' corruption.

Shadow: Wrath was particularly cruel to them, eventually as the Shadows won their War, he chained all Vilorlith's children to himself as he drank her power for himself. Where he changed their ritual of understanding to one of thoughtlessness. Though he could never manage to stop them from being able to hear the actual song, he only hoped that they would never understand yet again.

Execution

The actual process and ritual never changed throughout the eons it has existed. The Brownie would find a quiet place to be comfortable where they would splay their ears as wide as possible, or whatever was a comfortable resting position for them. They would then concentrate on the music of the world around them, the sound of the wind, the birds in the trees, the swaying grass. The sound of waves against stone, the distant rumble of storms.

The worshipper would extend their hearing out as far as they could, which for them could legitimately extend for leagues, they would pay attention to every last detail until the song would appear. Soft and subtle, like the humming of a mother to her baby. A sweet and caring sound, weighted with the certainty only a child could hold.

In deeper meditative traces before Vilorlith had walked among them, they could hear the words to the song, though they wouldn't recognise the language it was in until much later. This deeper meditative state was achieved by days of listening without interruption, the mind focused intensely on everything around them. The listener would strive to become one with the world around them, to hear the song for everything it was.
