Whalers

Whalers have been a necessary but dangerous profession for several hundred years. In many Proto nations, the use of whale oil is preferred over the less potent sap oil used in Elvin and Dwarvin nations. Due to the dangerous nature of the profession, whale oil is expensive and often only used by the more wealthy populace. One can often quickly distinguish the wealth of a certain establishment based on the lighting at night.

Proto Whalers

Due to ship and equipment required to hunt whales, the majority of Proto whalers are under the employment or in contract with the Eperom Mari Trading Company. Because the whales are hunting to make a profit, only the oil is kept while the the remaining corpse of the whale is dropped into the sea. This practice is what makes the profession so dangerous. The corpses left behind are known to attract all matters of creatures, some known and unknown.

Elvin Whalers

Only two Elvin nations are known to hunt whales due to their location, the Teuta Eisom & the Kingdom of the Spring Isles. In contrast to whalers in Proto nations, the hunting of whales is not for the sole purpose of collecting whale oil. Elvin whalers use and sell every part of the whale. In the Spring Isles, the heart of every whale is brought to towns elders to offer blessing before its returned to the sea.

On Proto whaling ships, only seasoned sailors are allowed to their crews. Whaling captains will often turn away any sailor that does not have at least 10 seasons on their belt. On Elvin whaling ships, experience is not a requirement. Elves believe more in having a crew that they trust.
