Game Recap - November 11th, 2018

General Summary

Continuing from last session, the party finished up their last tasks in the city of Cannonfall, with Darodin collecting his fine armor bought from Winter's Wares the day before.   With most of the party going to bed, and Darodin out collecting his armor, Calcine decided to sit in the tavern in the shadows and watch the comings and the goings of those who patronize the bar. Two men entered and conversed with each other about whether or not the newcomers, meaning the party, were with the Circle or with the Council. Seeming to be with neither one, Calcine opted to not make himself known.   Upon arriving back at the tavern to find the rest of the party in bed and asleep, Darodin opted to spend his evening with the ladies of the night found in the Violet Blossom on the seedier end of town.   With little else left to do in Cannonfall, and Sa'rai's brother needing finding, they all collected their things and boarded a train for the 3-day journey to Falcon's Rest on the outskirts of the Carbonwater Forest.   Arriving in the early evening, they're met by the local welcoming committee, a human man who identifies himself only by the first name of "Johnathan." Directed to the One-Eyed Gnoll inn, the only inn in town, the adventurers made their way to the inn. After dinner, Sa'rai went for a walk, followed by Calcine, Reynauld and Darodin, hoping to attract a little attention, perhaps the right kind of attention, in the hopes that someone would recognize her and give her information regarding her brother who was lost in the wilderness in Debronia, seeking the Dragon's Emerald.   Meanwhile, Thawaka and Dart took the opportunity to examine the wall that surrounds the city, a large structure made from the trees around the town. They found nothing out of the ordinary, only a couple of local militia guarding the gates, and a sturdy fence with no way in but the gates on either side of the town.   While heading back to the inn, Calcine noticed a tail slipping down a back alley, and followed its owner, a spotted Tabaxi in a hooded cloak, around the leatherworkers, and behind the inn to the service entrance, whereupon he found the Tabaxi sitting calmly at a table near the back of the bar. Joined by the others, including Thawaka and Dart returning from their outing, Calcine made them aware of their furry shadow.   Thawaka, throwing caution to the wind, walked over and started talking to the Tabaxi. The group invited him to their table and he finally acquiesced, knowing that there wasn't any way to get rid of the stubborn adventurers. Introducing himself as Game of Chance, he answered the party's questions about the town, and the surrounding land and forest. Eventually, he revealed himself, by way of a symbol of a dragon's head in the fur on his arm, to be a member of the Draconic Council, the group that is working with Sari in Cannonfall to assist the Jeweled Dragons and fight the plane blight that is threatening the eastern countries.   Telling them that he will be watching them, Game of Chance took his leave with a quick mage hand slap to the back of a very drunk Darodin's head.   Later that evening, Reynauld and Dart were wakened by the sound of quiet commotion in the street outside. Looking out the window, they saw a pack of hyenas walking down the street, sniffing and snarling at each other. When they looked up, they met eyes with Reynauld, and that attracted their attention to the point that they tried to get into the building. After the others were wakened, Darodin, still drunk from the night before, ran out the back door of the inn, looking to confront the hyenas. With a shout, he yelled at them, trying to intimidate them while Thawaka ran past to engage them directly.   Thawaka managed to notice the giant Hyena striding around the corner of the street, it's eyes glowing baleful red with a maleficent light.   While Thawaka kept two of the hyenas busy outside the inn, two of them broke through the glass into the room that Sa'rai and Reynauld had shared. Thankfully, they weren't in the room when it happened, and between Reynauld and Calcine, they managed to dispatch the two of them handily with a throwing star and a round of Magic Missile.   Outside, Darodin, still drunk, took on the giant hyena by himself while Thawaka dispatched the last two hyenas. Stroke after stroke of his broadsword took down the hyena's defenses, and with the help of Sa'rai and Reynauld, the party managed to cleave the giant hyena's head, without a single injury to the party. Was it luck, or was something looking out for them?   Thawaka, searching the corpses, found a braided cord with a small rune at the knot tied around the giant hyena's neck, and he took it with him into the inn, collecting the others as he went.   What is the deal with this amulet? Why were hyenas allowed to roam through the city? Where is Sa'rai's brother, and why did he disappear?   More next time!
