Killian Addison Character in The Great Dust Bowl | World Anvil

Killian Addison

Created in 2268 at an advanced laboratory hidden under the Commonwealth, Killian was a prototype designed to be an elite member of an asset recovery unit eventually known as the Coursers. Tasked with returning other escaped synthetic being to a life of slavery inside the Institute, her job was not only physically taxing, but also mentally. As the perfect storm of science and hubris led to many of these machines developing a sense of self and consciousness, these incidents were quite common despite being downplayed to the general public.

It wasn't long until Killian began having her own questions about herself and what she was doing. Many raids involved the discovery of damning evidence against her organic masters, and no matter how much she tried to stay focused, the guilt continued to grow. Knowing that anything less than a well calculated plan would end in disaster, she made a point to be seen as an overachiever. Despite the growing awareness of her actions, she did terrible things to her own kind just to prove her loyalty and throw off any suspicion of what she had planned next.

Still nothing really but numbers, she began plotting an escape with another Courser designated A3-21. Two of the most trusted and skilled members of their team, they knew that if one were to go rogue, the other would be the first one sent in to track them down. Sure enough, after A3-21 missed his check-in, it was Killian that was tasked with finding him. Due to the number of spies in the Commonwealth, the pair opted to avoid getting any memory work or facial reconstruction before leaving. Instead, they said one last goodbye, ditched their Institute gear and clothing, and then set off in different directions to further confuse their former masters.

Although unaware of the fate of her friend, she often repeats his motto, "Self-determination is NOT a malfunction!" to anyone that questions whether or not a machine should be allowed to make its own decision. Killian was not quite as altruistic with her messages however, usually treating organic life exactly how organic life had treated her. Not only did she migrate further than any other synth on record, but she also refused help or a memory wipe, feeling that the pain was necessary to keep her focused. Avoiding any contact with settlements, many wandering traders fell victim to her methods of discretion and now rest in unmarked graves along her path.

Originally intending to make it to California so she could sail further west and see what became of the rest of the world, like many others, Killian found herself trapped in the Great Dust Bowl after a series of storms drove her deeper into the chaos rather than back out. Almost immediately captured by the Corvega City Slavers, there was little she could do on an open desert to avoid them. Subjected to further cruelties for the second time at the hands of organics, her mind was now fully made up on the sanctity of life. Taking advantage of her captors' lack of experience with individuals such as herself, she bided her time and once again performed a flawless plan to escape.

Sowing the seeds of rebellion, she quietly repurposed a number of slave collars into hand grenades. When the time was right, she hacked the automated security around the manufacturing plant and turned them on the slavers, sending them into a panic. Leading the assault, Killian caused catastrophic damage to the fabricators with her improvised explosives before setting her sights on the motor pool. After securing the vehicles, she sabotaged much of what they couldn't drive and sent the other survivors on their path to freedom.

Killian hung back however, not trusting the odds of actually outrunning their pursuers, and having no clue where exactly she was or what she could consider a safe haven. Instead, she watched as the former slaves made their daring escape and also as the hunting party left in a rage to retrieve them. Amidst the chaos, she slipped silently into the wastes with homemade camouflage and struck off to get her bearings in the region. When she found the rag-tag group of strange anti-social terrorists known as the Robco Liberation Army, she knew she found something with potential.

Quickly asserting a dominant position within the anarchial organization, she instituted changes that helped turn a small operational cell into a full-fledged militia. Marching her new troops on anyone within range of their factory, Killian began collecting supplies and resources for an even bigger fight. With her sights now set on the Vault Crawler, it is up to the Red Devils to stop her before she begins, although only First Citizen Martin seems to be taking the threat seriously. After all, many go back and forth on whether or not a synth has a soul. No one with a rational mind believes an average Mr. Handy or Protectron is alive, leading to many discounting them as silly radicals.

Gifted with eidetic memory, Killian was able to reproduce technologies from schematics she viewed in the Institute. This allowed her to turn the old Robco facility into an operational manufacturing plant, capable of not only churning out fresh soldiers, but also armaments for human volunteers. She is notoriously impatient and cruel to organic life, the abuse she was subjected to impacting her every interaction with anyone non-synthetic. Humans that serve the Robco Liberation Army have learned to give her a wide berth, her legendary temper thinning their numbers more than a few times during her short rule.
