Jenavieve Martin Character in The Great Dust Bowl | World Anvil

Jenavieve Martin

Born 2241 Jenavieve was the daughter of a First Citizen aboard the Vault Crawler in charge of dealing with the complicated machinery that kept the whole platform moving. She displayed an early knack for engineering claiming she had the ability to imagine all the parts separated or together in her mind with utter clarity. Though originally destined to follow in her mother’s footsteps, her life changed the day Paladin Haverson and his Thunderbirds touched down on the derelict landing pads at the center of the city.

She was only seven when the Red Devils were founded but it quickly became the only thing she wanted to be a part of. Despite her mother’s best efforts Jenavieve would often sneak out to hide in the hangars so she could observe the technicians and pilots. When she was twelve she managed to tap into the air control chatter with an old ham radio. By the time she was old enough to take the career test she passed with such a high score that she was able to skip much of the orientation and jump right into simulation training.

Even with her passion the competition soon became fierce. There was a limited number of pilot seats and many more were needed for behind the scenes logistics. To stand out she swore to take any mission to any part of the Dust Bowl so long as she was at the helm. This seemed to backfire however when she was given control of an antique rigid airship designed for long range recon and support.

With all of her hopes riding on impressing the First Citizens Council Jenavieve had little choice but to feign graciousness. While on patrol she would spend her days in her makeshift laboratory that replaced her sleeping quarters. She eventually developed a pair of devices that allows for safe docking of smaller aircraft to her ship, letting them refuel and resupply before returning to action.

This invention earned her a sponsorship to join the First Citizens Council, putting her just enough ahead of the competition to succeed with her score on the triennial exam. Instead of pawning off her aging airship onto the next desperate initiate she made a few upgrades. Now a mobile command center, Jenavieve had a dedicated escort of biplanes and a full crew to perform her duties at the edge of the Vault Crawler’s influence.

Although still considered a minor issue to most others, the Robco Liberation Army has already made Jenavieve’s radar. When not on official duties she often spends her time searching for enough evidence that the organization is indeed a threat to the Crawler. She has been known to recruit wastelanders from Undercity for extra expendable bodies. The ones that do come back are paid so well they develop a very selective memory about the ones who didn’t.
