2nd Recon Infantry Company Settlement in The Great Dust Bowl | World Anvil

2nd Recon Infantry Company

Based out of New Vegas, four of the seven platoons were dispatched on a reconnaissance mission east after the NCR was successful in initially taking Hoover Dam. Expecting a counterattack from the Legion, these men and women were tasked with calculating remaining enemy numbers. A primarily ghoul company, they were better adapted to handle the higher levels of radiation encountered in the east.

When they were caught in a freak sandstorm that only seemed to be getting worse, they took shelter in a cave system near Colorado Springs. It happened to be home to a host of hostile creatures, forcing them deeper inside until they lost their way. Eventually they found another entrance and took it without hesitation, fatefully stranding themselves inside the Great Dust Bowl.

Unable to radio back to command and with supplies running low, they spread out to search for signs of civilization. Finding a displaced band of refugees that had ended up on the wrong side of the Syndicate, they offered protection in exchange for a civilian support network. With an outpost established they have begun looking for a way back home even though most reports indicate that the caves have since been reburied by the storm.

Nothing fancy, they have made their temporary forward operations camp in the tops of a few skyscrapers that still poke above the sand. This has allowed them to dig out the bottom levels and the entrance to what is left of the metros. Water is drawn up from old reservoirs and used to feed crops that they are desperately trying to get to take hold on the roofs. Every day is a struggle to get by and it is not unheard of for deserters to leave their uniform and try to join a regular settlement or even the ghoul criminal empire.

Main Food Sources

The Extruder: A few handy devices were brought from New Vegas designed to aid the Company in long term desert survival. One such machine can turn raw organics into an edible substance with an assortment of textures. Meat is actually abundant here as compared to the rest of the region. The caves running into pre-war Colorado Springs provide unique opportunities for animals to make their way into the Great Dust Bowl. The fungi growing inside also supplements their nutritional needs when hunting proves unsuccessful.

The Rehydrator: Water on the other hand is not so easy to come by. In a part of the Great Dust Bowl that has been buried for over a hundred years, accessing the underground streams is nearly impossible with the equipment they have on hand. Instead, they are forced to recycle all liquids in a machine that returns it to a drinkable substance. Spitting, urinating, or even ringing the water out of a sock outside the collector is considered extremely offensive, as every precious drop of moisture is needed for the Company's survival.

    Accepted forms of Currency

  • Caps are prefered as they spend the easiest with the few traders that come this way. Although there usually isn't much for sale, they do offer mercenary contracts to clear out pest animals and mutants to those that can afford it.

  • NCR Dollars are not accepted as currency but have another special purpose here.

  • Pre-war Money is accepted at a heavily depreciated exchange rate. Having only a few traders in which to make a profit off with these old bills, they trade fifty for one cap.
