The Grand Vox Conspiracy

A rumor has been circulating throughout Beldam for several decades involving the Most Illuminated Church and its leader, the Grand Vox. The story is believed to have originated in Gemmingtown, either having been uncovered by or fabricated by a fraternity-like fellowship called the "Gemmingtown Goulies." The tale as traditionally told is that interdimensional travellers known as Cephalonites, or "Dream Scrapers," infiltrated the church over 120 years ago.   When Grand Vox Jaash-Omari the Wise, died of an apparent poisoning, the church elected a new Grand Vox, Marishus the Hidden. It was greatly believed by most of the church that Bishop Vellous of Hurio would be the next Grand Vox. During the final night of election proceedings, Vellous was found dead of an apparent suicide by the Order of Saint Polidori. In Vellous's possession was a cryptic letter, written in an unknown and strange ink, similar to that of a squid or octopus.   The letter stated that a race of travellers that witches and mystics call "The Dream Scrapers" had found a way to infiltrate into our dimension from a realm called "the darkened realm." The Darkened Realm is spoken of in ancient Anakari texts. These creatures are humanoid figures, tall and lanky, with cephalopod-like heads. These creatures possess extreme psychic and psionic abilities and are known for possessing individuals by implanting a parasite like extension of themselves into a host, effectively turning an individual into a kind of psychic slave.   The letter further went on to state that the entire conclave had been influenced by the Dream Scrapers and the office of the Grand Vox would "forever be enslaved to darkened realm, under the influence of creatures cold and bent on conquest of this universe." The letter implied that all Grand Vox's would be "impregnated by those who scrape our dreams, until the Age of Emancipation, and the revelation of the last Grand Vox, one with a voice most deafening."   Marishus was not a bishop, but was in fact a generally unknown scribe and the head librarian for the church library and protectorate of the "Collection Most Prohibited." Marishus' election was considered extremely uncharacteristic and when the conclave was concluded and the new Grand Vox declared, the announcement was made alongside that of Bishop Vellous suicide. Several riots occurred in Byronne and throughout Beldam, resulting in numerous deaths of citizens and clergy and the destruction of a number of local church buildings. It took the counts and their guards 3 days to quell the unrest throughout Beldam.   The theory claims that a member of the Order of Polidori, Samarus of Byronne, smuggled a copy of the letter out of the Prohibited Collection and shared it with the Gemmingtown Ghoulies, of which he was a member in his youth. The letter is rumored to contain several prophecies including some specific to Beldam and others announcing future events taking place in the "darkened realm."    The primary crux of the conspiracy is that a new ritual was added to the conclave inducting a new Grand Vox, a secret and abominable rite where the individual is infected with the alien parasite that traces its presence back to Grand Vox Marishus the Hidden. Though believed to be only a myth, there are some in the clergy and others, such as the Gemmingtown Ghoulies, who believe in the stories authenticity. Many changes to the doctrine of the Most Illuminated Church were implemented by Grand Vox Marishus during the 5th Council of Byronne which included the prohibition of certain teachings and a noted increase in occult and supernatural occurrences seem to point to some truth in the legend for many.
