The Ellington-Cottingly Beldam Charter
The Ellington-Cottingly Beldam Company was founded by Corrina Cottingly and Ebanezer Ellington, wealthy landowners from the Kingdom of Standingmore across the eastern sea from Beldam. The King of Standingmore, Garri Von Montaar, received a report from Pliney the Scientist, following his extensive exploration of the remote island continent of Beldam. King Von Montaar was approached by Corrina and Ebanezer who sought the kings sponsorship of establishing a Standingmore colony on Beldam. Von Montaar was eager to expand his kingdom and to open a friendly port between the eastern continent of Rottingwell and the unknown regions to the west of the sea.
The Cottingly and Ellington families drew alliance with several prominent family from the kingdoms to the east. In anticipation of he journey the drew up a charter, now called the Ellington-Cottingly Beldam Charter. The document detailed the plans agreed upon for the creation of a government, the division of provinces, basic economic policy, policing and militia, and the code of rights. The charter also required that a fair representation of the races be including in the founding colony.
Using Pliney's works as a guideline, policies and laws were put in place regarding native populations, establishment of and the limits of The Most Illuminated Church, and the expected boundaries for the establishment of provinces. The King sponsored the majority of expenses in expectation that Beldam would serve as a colony, providing resources for the kingdom and safe passage for the Kings ships across the western sea.
The charter continues to act as an established doctrine for Beldam's governance. Following the Emancipation War of Beldam, the charter was amended to include several passages regarding the continents self-governance as well as a common-wealth relationship with Standingmore that continues to this day. The charter is kept, protected, in the Boddinger-Torrance Monastery in Byronne.
