The Battle for Shinningholm Province

The first province to be declared "rouge" by the Most Illuminated Church of Beldam was that of Shinningholm. Founded by a pirate turned privateer, Wulfric Shinningholm, the province occupied a relatively small coastal area near the northern mountains. Wulfric had been accused of necromancy, including the unnatural resurrection of his recently deceased wife, Leona, and their stillborn daughter Elsie. Wulfric was a student of a western necromancer, Quintillus, but had disavowed the practice before the Most Illuminated Church prior to settling in Beldam.   Leona was reported deceased by the surgeon, Ingmar Boddinger, following her death due to complications from childbirth. Wulfric had ordered that her death be kept secret. Several days later, Ingmar witnessed Wulfric, Leona, and their stillborn daughter shopping in the market of Byronne. Alarmed and horrified, Ingmar approached the Bishop of Byronne, Ristas of Wesliaar, demanding that Wulfric be brought up on charges of necromancy. The Bishop approached Wulfrics mansion and after questioning him, began to leave. Ristas then heard the cry of an infant coming from the second floor of the house. Panicked, Wulfric stabbed the bishop with a sword hidden behind his back, killing the bishop. Wulfric realized this action would lead to war.   The other Counts of Beldam, realizing Wulfrics coastal province was "incommunicado" and soon to be rouge, forged an alliance to attempt to forcibly usurp Wulfric. A battle ensued lasted 15 days, including a siege against the Shinningholm compound. The walls of the compound were breached and the counts drove forward into the mansion. Several of the counts and their soldiers found the Shinningholm family, including the believed deceased wife and child, barricaded in the master suite.   The Counts and their warriors burst into the room and slaughtered Wulfric and his family. Once the trio was dead, a woman, dressed in black robes, a skull mask covering her face, appeared from behind the curtains. She proclaimed a curse upon the counts and their soldiers and declared the province of Shinningholm as "cursed for all eternity." Misfortune, disease, and disaster befell the counts and all involved in the slaughter of the family. Today, Shinningholm is part of the Rice Province, but the Shinningholm mansion remains unoccupied and is generally believed to be haunted as well as cursed.
