Fjarverand

Fjarverand is a mysterious entity which was encountered by The Writer early in his journey through the Spirit World.   The Spiritual Travelers also seemed to encounter the phenomenon that precedes Fjarverand, but they did not encounter the creature itself as they consulted their Field Guide before acting. During their first night in the Spirit World their second guard, Agave, began to hear knocking as it was nearing the end of his shift. The fog had already filled their camp and the rest of the forest, and as he began to awaken the next guard the knocking began to get more and more intense and always sounded as though it were coming from behind them.   Kaswink and Agave woke up the rest of the camp while Hysteria began reaching behind themselves for a door, and, surprisingly enough, they did find one. Before they could open it, however, they were stopped by Kaswink and Namina who had consulted The Field Guide to find a note stating that if they hear knocking on a foggy night to not open the door.

Basic Information

Anatomy

A monstrous creature with the body, legs and hooves of a bison with long, matted hair. The fur towards the top of its back is either a different color or so matted with filth it appears to be much darker in comparison.   Its face is mostly a long, gharial-like snout. When it appears you can only ever see one of its eyes though it is always visible regardless of what angle you’re looking at it from.

Biological Traits

The most immediately noticeable trait of Fjarverand is the stench it emits. The sour, pungent combination of filth, waste, and rotten food causes almost immediate nausea. The Writer noted that the the smell, combined with the fear he felt, seemed to paralyze him.

Civilization and Culture

History

A glimpse into Fjarverand's history was revealed on Nurend 18, 308 while the Spiritual Travelers were heading west to get Tympi home to rest. It seems that there is only one of whatever this creature is, and that it had yet to be seen until about 50 years ago. Not much was even known about it from Tympi as she was the one that chose to open the door the night that The Writer saw it.   Additionally, the same trademark knocking of this being was heard just moments before Kaswink discovered a Paper Bird which had some information about her short time in the Spirit World and that she was having a bit of a rough time. With the parallels between these memories of her knocking at doors and receiving no help, coupled with the recent appearance of the creature, it has been theorized that Fjarverand and Anise might be the same being.   The question now is how to find Anise's body, or if her body was transformed into Fjarverand, and if it is worth the risk to test this theory by opening the door the next time they hear the knocking.
