The Writer

Description
The Writer is a rather mysterious entity and, as the name suggests, the writer of The Field Guide.   It was discovered by the Spiritual Travelers that he is a young human man, possibly short or average height depending on the still unknown age, and that he was dressed in typical peasant browns. This information came from a strange dream they shared the night of Nurend 12, 308. They never found a reflective surface to get a good look at him though.   On Nurend 13, 308, while reading through Tympi's Journal in her house, the Spiritual Travelers discovered that The Writer's name is Basil.   Information that can be gathered from The Field Guide is that he was rather young when he set out on his journey into the Spirit World. He had initially only ran in after his sister with hopes of finding her and bringing her back home. He never found her, however, and, while his entries did stop after encountering some spirit, he may still be wandering The Gates.
History:
  Story of The Field Guide
Beginning: The Writer's journey began, as previously mentioned, when he chased his sister through a gate that they had constructed into the Spirit World. On the other side of this passage, he couldn't see any sign of her nearby and bravely ventured forth with hopes of encountering her or someone that had seen her.
Tympi: Shortly after this, The Writer met Tympi, the leader of the Mothlings who claimed that the Forests The Writer was walking near belonged to her. They quickly became friends and Tympi showed The Writer some great herbology tricks to help him survive in this Spirit World. He survived an encounter with a creature called Fjarverand, met with other Mothlings, and one day set off with Tympi to find his sister outside the forests.   While traveling through the forests, Tympi and The Writer encountered another spirit, The Unblinking Sein. Tympi instructed The Writer to flee. He did so and did not see what happened to his friend.
Alone: Some time passed and The Writer eventually met an old woman. She gave The Writer shelter, food, water, and helped him recover. The Writer soon became a bit clostrophic being stuck inside this woman's home for however long it had been, and he left to continue his journey and find his sister.   After leaving the old woman's house, The Writer had many challenges including a Cottage Trap and The Twisting Stumps, before he met with another new friend: Spenolt.
Spenolt: Spenolt and their Jellyfish helped The Writer reach a far away lake at the end of the river. At this lake, The Writer witnessed Spenolt and several of their jellyfish comrades travel into the lake which had a very slow gyre. They vanished into this lake, and The Writer had to say goodbye to another friend.   From the lake, The Writer took some time to himself before traveling again southwest. He soon came across a village of hags. Approaching them apprehensively he soon discovered that they appear to be benevolent as they began offering him various fruits and vegetables from their gardens. Here The Writer encountered Simol, the leader of these Fruit Hags.
Hags: Throughout his stay The Writer soon found that he was slowly losing his mind. Perhaps what he was being fed was causing some delirium, and as days and possibly weeks went missing he set out again with hopes of escaping this terrible place. As he traveled away from the hags he found a tree of tangled branches and twisted bark, the branches seemed to constantly be "off screen" and the roots wove between the air and the dirt, massive and unrelenting. The Writer found it strangely beautiful though left it be as a bad omen or perhaps a dream. After reviewing the notes in his field guide, he found that several notes were left that he did not remember writing, more evidence of the Fruit Hags tampering with his mind.
Badlands: The Writer was next conscious in the Badlands. He traveled for some time, finding all sorts of strange things and even a gate before eventually coming across a wall. He made camp next to this wall and found that when he woke up the surrounding area was the same, but the wall itself had moved presenting a door. Behind this door, The Writer found a Labyrinth.   After traveling through this labyrinth for a good while, he realized that this is likely not where he will find his sister and found a way outside by remaining motionless in a safe room until the exit appeared. The Writer escaped this labyrinth, but found he was still stuck in the badlands, and he needed to find water soon. At some point along his journey he must have collapsed onto a glass platform, fell asleep, and woke up being greeted by a group of mushroom folk, the first thing he saw was a Winter Moth.
Grasslands: The Writer, having woken up in the Grasslands and surrounded by Meli and her people, spent some time with them, learned of their ways and did some more studying on local flora and fauna before departing once more to find his sister. He decided to head further north.
Northlands: Further north, The Writer found that the road grew longer and longer, wilderness for miles, nothing but Coyotes to keep him company. He passed by several homes which he disregarded as traps before eventually finding A Village. This village was populated by small, robed figures which communicated with The Writer telepathically. Here The Writer began to face a new kind of challenge: Apathy.   After finding The Dying Gate and being warned not to travel within, he realized that this place was changing him, and the caretakers informed him that he would need to leave or be stuck here as one of them forever. He mustered up his will and once again reminded himself of his quest to find his sister.
The Mountains: The Writer continued to travel further north. Along his journey he saw mountains in the distance and noted that they seemed to move along the horizon and decided that rather than going around them he would just head through. He soon saw that there was also a village at the base of the mountains. This village seemed to contain spirits that were not so easily apparent as the others he had encountered in this world so far, but the more time that he spent there the more in tune with himself and the world around him he became.   When he first arrived in this village he witnessed what he initially believed to be a dream involving a hand with incredibly long fingers attached to a lengthy, thin arm reach from one of his bags and begin dragging itself along the floor. The spirits of this village over time explained that this creature that attacked him was real and was corrupted by The Twisting Gate. Through the Snow's balance and harmony, The Writer was able to relieve the negative emotions that had been pent up and calm his mind before again realizing that this may be a rather dangerous place to be as well.   The lack of pain, anxiety, and so forth seemed to prevent him from truly wanting to seek out his sister. He was experiencing peace and felt it perhaps unnecessary to leave this place. Although he did eventually find the will to leave once again and set out to find his sister.   His journey led him through the mountains as they had at long last separated again. He found many unusual things within the mountainous terrain as they pried themselves apart including boulders walking about, rock-covered ogres, and entire sections of the mountainous terrain shift and disappear. Before long he encountered another gate within the temporary mountain pass which he again chose to ignore ever focussed on his lost kin.
The Cliff: On the other side of the mountain was more tundra, though in the distance The Writer did see a cliff that seemed to extend over a great drop into nothingness. Walking through this land the writer felt as though "the ground was walking beneath him" and that at one point it would surely "open its maw" amongst other casual observations. Though he did eventually reach the cliff and found a strange, massive orb of swirling colors, darkness and light, and all manner of spirit writhing within two distinct hemispheres. The orb was maddening to see and The Writer spent a great deal of time observing it and staying in this area pondering what it all means.   While staying in this area The Writer eventually encountered another spirit that offered him some insight as to what happened to his sister. It offered the writer a way to help her survive through a journal though not much is known about the spirit or what happened to The Writer beyond this. He may still be traveling The Gates and writing to this day.

The Writer, Basil, has recently been happened upon by the Spiritual Travelers. They found him wandering around the Expedition Base after they returned home from their mission to the Gate Camp. He seems quite forgetful, mostly relying on what he has written down as his memories, but the one thing he remembers but refuses to write about is his sister, Anise.   He has offered/agreed to stick around for awhile and help when needed. He claims that he can answer just about any question about the Spirit World (as long as it is written down in his notes).
