The present elector princess Katrina Zenda’s parents, the old elector prince and consort, were killed when she was a small child, and the role of Protector of the Skoldarm Alliance fell to her uncle Klaus, an ambitious and venal man. After ignoring her for most of her childhood and adolescence, at age sixteen Klaus forcibly married her off to Olaf Hauptmann, a crony and a brutal man. The celebrated galactic troubadour Gwyn Aurill created a song of the wedding called “the Rape of Zenda,” and most Alliance worlds agreed. Katrina dropped out of sight to perform her mandatory military service while Alliance worlds muttered protests and worse. Tithes due to Klaus in his role of Protector were late in coming, and sometimes never showed at all.
Two years later, Katrina returned in a big way. Accompanied by a squadron of elite troopers whom she had served with, she stormed her uncle’s palace and slew him and several of his cronies and declared herself princess and protector of the Skoldarm Alliance. She then blinded and hamstrung her pig of a husband, but did not kill him; instead, she imprisoned him in a polar retreat. Two years later, she gave birth to her only child, Allyssa. Many years later, Katrina and Cosimo Anafesto tangled over the rediscovery of Hadrian’s Moon. While she was angry that she lost the system to Cosimo, the charming younger man impressed her, and at his invitation, the pair has played several games of strategy over the years via messenger. They also visit with each other frequently when at Court on Hesperides and argue about politics and religion. Rumors persist of an affair, but no true proof exists. Most recently, Katrina sent her daughter to Spica, hoping Allyssa’s beauty would put the canny Cosimo Anafesto off his game in a trade negotiation. Instead, Cosimo appears to be enamored of the younger Zenda, and vice-versa; Allyssa returned from her visit singing Cosimo’s praises. It remains to be seen if anything will come of this mutual infatuation.
