The Forgotten City XXXVIII
General Summary
As the battle with the Beastman continued both on the beach and in the guardroom a beastman charged across the room to strike at Alex, but Theo struck him hard in the jaw with his mace as he moved through the crowded room, he turned to strike but off balance from the hit he snapped the haft of his axe instead as he swung it. Alex cut at him with the blade he had taken off of the necromancer but barely scratched him. The guard in the corner swung at Elissa wounding her. On the beach Mitra was tearing apart the guard she had first attacked. Riven squared up from behind the table to attack the guard attacking Alex but missed in the fracas. Elissa and Herk missed their targets, but Riven sank an arrow into the shoulder of one she had missed earlier. Kegho cut at one of the beastmen on the beach with his ax. but he riposted with a vicious blow. The Jiam slipped into the shadows hoping to find a place from which to strike. A guard landed another blow on Alex. Teleptyon loosed two magic missiles at the beastmen attacking Riven and Elissa, which Elissa followed by sinking her spear straight through a guard's heart so soundly that she needed to push his torso off her spear with her foot as blood and air from the guard's lungs burbled along it. Antonious missed and Theo struck. Alex followed up Theo's strike with a killing blow with the dagger which moved almost of its own accord to kill the enemy.
On the beach Herk struck out at the last uninjured guard but missed. Khufu commanded him too to "swim" sending him splashing into the water, but this guard swam toward the boats, grasping one of them. Herk began slashing at him from the shore. The Jiam also began lobbing stones with his sling at the same. The first one in the water began losing strength and sinking.
The remaining guard in the guardhouse made a tactical retreat out the door, butTeleptyon loosed a dart down the hall catching him between pieces of armor. Theo moved to strike him but was only able to graze him. Alex ducked and tumbled through the hall to cut off the guard's escape, but was unable to hit him.
On the beach the guards in the water continued to drown while The Jiam and Herk harried them. Mitra killed her first victim and turned, red in muzzle and lips curled in a snarl, at the next.
Riven and Elissa saw that anyone they could hit in the guard house were already dead and moved toward the beach where they found things messy but in hand.
Kegho and the guard he was fighting missed each other. Alex continued to miss with his new dagger, but was able to get a better sense of how to let it guide his hand as he did. The fleeing guard swung at Alex and though he was sure that he would be hit, he felt only a tingle across his skin and the ax blade narrowly missed. He filed away that he would need to tell Teleptyon the ring was indeed protective. Theo also missed with his mace from behind. Herk slew the last guard on the shore with a mighty blow. Riven put down the last of the drowning guards with an arrow. With the guards on the beach dead, Mitra calmed down. Teleptyon grabbed a chair and sat while Theo, Alex and the last guard duked it out in the hall. Alex taking a blow before Theo could crush his skull like a melon from behind.
On the beach Elissa organized them to pull the boats onto shore and tie them off. theo and Antonious ministered to the wounded. As they did they began to hear a sound like something clawing in the walls coming from the ceiling. They formed up and made their way to the meditation room where the smashed chest that had nearly killed Alex and had been a great triumph of Asbjørn Þórsteinnsson lay on the floor.
Alex asked if everyone was ready and raised the key intoning "Paruhapta" as magisterially as possible. Teleptyon rolled his eyes. "Let me have this!" Alex hissed back as the door ground slowly open under its own mysterious power.
