Purpose / Function
Fortrop began as a research station designed to facilitate scientific exploration and technological advancement in 2078. Its purpose was to study space phenomena, conduct experiments in zero gravity, and develop new technologies that could benefit humanity.
Over the years that initial purpose had shifted from scientific exploration to the survival and perseverance of the human race. Fortrop became a go-to destination for the privileged, a place where advanced technologies and resources could be leveraged to sustain life.
Currently, the Fortrop is no longer a place for research but mostly the only place that humanity can safely inhabit.
Alterations
Starting out as a single station, it gradually grew as more and more components were needed. The first stations (after the Iris), were Nexus, Fabrik, Prism, and Coal, then, as Earth's death became imminent, Gaia, Allium and Solas Stations were added.
Almost as an afterthought, Eir, Basalt, and the Under Deck were haphazardly joined to make space for more people. It wasn't good space but space nonetheless.
Architecture
The original structure was functional and utilitarian. It featured simple, efficient designs prioritising functionality over aesthetics.
As the station expanded and "normal" grey people started inhabiting the Fortrop, it incorporated a blend of brutalism and cyberpunk. A lot of the core structures remain utilitarian, with exposed concrete, metal beams, and a focus on durability and strength; mostly because it's easier and quicker to build than anything extravagant. Newer sections, particularly those related to advanced research and high-tech industries, feature cyberpunk elements. Neon lights, holographic displays, sleek metal and glass surfaces, and a pervasive presence of advanced technology.
Defenses
Advanced energy shields, providing a first line of defence against attacks and environmental hazards (especially radiation). The Fortrop also has an array of outer, defensive weaponry, including missile launchers, and railguns; though they are mainly abandoned and unmaintained as no external threat has been noted since inhabiting the station.
Inside, however, security is tight.
Extensive surveillance networks monitor all areas, ensuring constant vigilance. Cameras, motion sensors, and biometric scanners are ubiquitous. Heavily armed security personnel are stationed throughout the Fortrop, ready to respond to any internal threats. They use a combination of advanced weaponry and cybernetic enhancements to maintain order. Certain high-security zones feature automated defence systems, including turrets and robotic sentries, programmed to neutralise intruders.
