Chevalian

Chevalian are noble landed Knights who hold their fiefs along the borders of duchy that holds their fealty. 
While Chevalian are a lower rank than Barons, they owe their fealty directly to their Duke.
They are held to be a higher rank than a Lord while within their own fief.  But are considered to be only a Lord while outside of their fief.
Raising worthy fighters to the rank of Knight to protect their border fiefs is within the Chevalians remit.
