Beastfolk Species in The Fantasy Nexus | World Anvil

Beastfolk

Beastfolk, also sometimes referred to as "beastmen", are a race of people in the Fantasy Nexus.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Beastfolk all appear to be versions of animals that became bipedal and capable of speech. The anatomy of a beastperson is entirely dependent on their species. A common list of beastfolk species includes, but is not limited to:
  • Amphibians (such as frogs and toads)
  • Avians (all species of birds)
  • Bats
  • Bears
  • Bovines
  • Cats (including large cats such as lions, tigers, pumas, leopards, jaguars, panthers, et. cetera)
  • Dogs (including wild dogs such as wolves, hyenas, jackals, coyotes, dingos, et. cetera)
  • Equines (such as zebras, donkeys, and horses)
  • Hippopotamuses
  • Lagomorphs
  • Lizards/Reptiles (such as snakes, geckoes, salamanders, and turtles)
  • Mustelids (ferrets, weasels, otters, badgers, minks)
  • Primates
  • Rats/Mice
  • Rhinoceroses
  • Swine (such as pigs and boars)
  • Vulpines (Foxes)
It should be noted that, unlike their non-sapient counterparts, every beastperson has opposable thumbs. For animal species that possess paws, the anatomy of their "hands" remains largely the same. However, for animal species that do not normally have digits or other hand-like structures, their upper extremties more closely resemble human hands (though the number of fingers depends on the species). Their feet, however, remain the same as their wild counterparts.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Although most races do not see beastfolk as resources to be exploited, sadly, since the Great War, humans have taken to poaching them for their horns, skins, fur, and other such items.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

As the different species sf beastfolk vastly differ from each other, this list of abilities is not designed to be exhaustive. It also discounts any elemental or magical affinities each species might have (for example, rhinoceros beastfolk have a notable affinity for earth magic). With this in mind, the listed abilities are limited to biological advantages and features that are possible with this race.
  • Flight
  • Enhanced Speed (either on land, on sea, or both)
  • Thermal Vision
  • Danger/Disaster/Storm Detection
  • Venom Secretion
  • Poison Secretion
  • Bioluminesence
  • Limb Regrowth
  • Camouflage
  • Enhanced Strength
  • Enhanced Stamina
  • Natural Weaponry (such as horns, claws, spines, tails, etc)
  • Enhanced Reflexes

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Beastfolk generally get along with most other species, though it ultimately depends on the individual. However, like most non-human races, beastfolk have a marked hatred of humans.
