Actualization (ACK-shu-all-ih-ZAY-shun)

Actualization, also called reification, materialization, manifestation, or simply creation magic, is a class of magic involving the transmutation of raw magic into physical objects.

Effect

Actualization comes in two forms. Although learning both is theoretically possible, no caster has ever achieved mastery of both fields.
  • Object actualizers are capable of creating objects from raw magic, be it weapons, potions, flasks, armor, shields, et cetera.
  • Summoners are actualizers who are capable of creating life in the form of familiars: creatures from the caster's imagination that can be called upon again whenever necessary. It should be noted that this ability is distinct from life creation; when the caster dies, so too do their familiars. Life creation magic also lacks the drawbacks that summoning-type actualizers have to deal with.

Side/Secondary Effects

Transmutation of raw magic into another form is a highly advanced and specialized art. As such, it takes a heavy drain on the user. Once actualization has begun, it cannot be stopped until the user either dies, or the actualization is complete. Like a muscle, the user can build up a tolerance and increase their stamina so that the cost of the magic isn't quite as high. However, budding actualizers often overexert themselves and end up dying from the magic's drain on the body.   There are other side effects, as well. Actualization is fully dependent on the caster's ability to use their imagination and visualize things in their head. The sharper and more precise the caster's imagination is, the better the outcome. Conversely, the more ill-defined an image is in the caster's head, the more unstable and unpredictable the end product will be. For this reason, casters with partial or complete aphantasia can never become actualizers, or if they can, their actualizations will never improve, and worse, may pose a threat to themselves or those around them.   Summoners face additional problems. Any familiar created by a summoner can rarely be destroyed and returned to raw magic; such a feat would surely kill the caster. This means that, when a familiar is dismissed, their consciousness resides inside the caster's own head. They are able to see and hear everything that the summoner can, and they can "speak" within the caster's mind. Many summoners who overestimated their limits fell to madness from the endless voices in their mind. More than that, familiars are individuals: they require all of the same mental and emotional support that a normal person would require to take proper care of themselves. Attending to so many people's needs leaves the summoner without any time to care for themselves, and above all else, once a summoner creates a familiar, they can never truly have privacy again. For all these reasons and more, many actualizers willingly choose to specialize in objects, rather than creatures.

Manifestation

The manifestation of an actualizer's power vastly varies by their desired outcome. Each actualizer is unique, and as such, actualization can appear as anything the caster desires.

Source

Actualizers use the ambient raw magic that flows through the universe to perform their work. Unlike most other classes of magic, drawing from the user's own magical pool is ill-advised. The already-present drain of simply performing actualization, combined with the strain of using one's own energy, makes for a lethal combination.
